MONTREAL, QC – CF Montreal suffers loss, which was their eighth loss of the season after Rémi Walter’s game-winning goal for Sporting Kansas City late in the second half.

Montreal strikes first but KC responds
Five minutes into the game it was the usual back and forth but the visitors were starting to apply some pressure on Montreal but the home side was taking it head-on. Two minutes later a bit of a defensive mishap in the box and Johnny Russel managed a shot on target but it was easy save for Sebastien Breza.

Montreal opened the scoring in the 13-minute as Lassi Lappalainan with a sublime cross found Romell Quioto who was able to head the ball into the net for the 1-0 lead. That goal put Montreal on the front foot and they started to take control of the game putting pressure on their opponents.

CF Montreal earned a corner in the 23-minute and Kamal Miller was able to head it on goal but this time Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper Tim Melia was able to make the save and grab the ball. Five minutes Roger Espinoza forced a turnover from Quioto and caught Breza out of his net and beat him midfield with a bullet to tie the game at one.
Jojea Kwizera was able to get a shot on target in the 39-minute but Melia was able to make the save on the Congo native. Montreal earned another corner in the 45-minute but again it was Miller with a header on target but right into the hands of Melia.
The visitor’s comeback to win as CF Montreal suffers loss
Wilfried Nancy started the second half making his first change subbing in Mathieu Choiniere for Kwizera to get some fresh leagues in the midfield. In the 51st minute, Samuel Piette had a chance on goal but his shot was too high as Melia jumped to push it over the bar and out.

The visitors took the lead in the 63-minute as Khiry Shelton from the side of the box found Walter running in the middle of the box and beat Breza with a straight shot into the back of the net for the 2-1 lead. Nancy made two changes in the 70-minute bringing on Joaquin Torres for Matko Miljevic and Mason Toye for Kei Kamara.
10 minutes later Nancy made two more changes bringing in Zachary Brault Guillard and Ahmed Hamdi for Lassi Lappalainen and Piette. Five minutes later Torres had a great scoring chance off a Montreal corner but Melia once again denied them the chance with a big save.
After five minutes of added time, the final whistle blew and CF Montreal had suffered their eighth loss of the season.
Coach reaction
Head coach Wilfried Nancy wasn’t happy with the result but says he has experienced games where the better team didn’t win.
” The execution in the final third could have been better but we stayed focused on the task and they did it well yes there is frustration and emotion but it is normal and the game went on and we weren’t able to score this goal”.
After losing two games in a row, CF Montreal will be back in action next Saturday when they welcome their biggest rival TFC to Saputo Stadium for another version of the 401 Derby. The game will be televised live at 7:30 p.m. ET nationally on TSN and will also be shown on TVA Sports. The last time these two teams played against each other, TFC eliminated CF Montreal from the 2022 Canadian Championship.
