A crazy first half at BMO Field

It was the final edition of the MLS regular season 401 derby. Yesterday night, CF Montreal made the trip down to face their arch rivals TFC at BMO Field. Two minutes into the game after a sloppy challenge from Samuel Piette in the penalty box the ref decided to go to VAR to check for a possible penalty.

After a short review, he pointed to the spot, and Federico Bernadeschi beat James Pantemis to make it 1-0 early for the home side. Less than two minutes later Lorenzo Insigne scored with an incredible volley and beat Pantemis to double Toronto’s lead.

Montreal got within one in the 19-minute as Kamal Miller was able to get to the rebound off a Kei Kamara shot and volleyed it into the back of the net to make it 2-1. Minutes later it was Djordje Mihailovic with a power shot from distance as he beat Alex Bono to tie the game at two.

In the 42-minute, the visitors took the lead as Kamara stole the ball and beat Bono five-hole to make it 3-2 for Montreal. The first half finished with Montreal up 3-2 after coming back from a 2-0 deficit in the first half.

Head coach Wilfried Nancy made his first change in the 66-minute as he brought in Ismael Kone who was almost transferred three days ago for Mihailovic. Pantemis was sprung into action four minutes later as Jesus Jimenez took a shot at goal but went right into his hands.

Nancy made two more changes in the 77-minute bringing in Mason Toye and Robert Thokellson for Quioto and Mathieu Choiniere. Nancy made his fourth change late in the game in the 86th minute as he brought Matko Miljevic for Kamara.

Insigne scored his second of the game late in stoppage time to make it 4-3 with less than two minutes to go in the game to get Toronto within one. After four minutes of stoppage time, the final whistle blew and Montreal had completed the comeback. As a result, CF Montreal won both encounters against Toronto FC, including a 2-0 win over TFC at Saputo Stadium. TFC won the other encounter in the Canadian Championship with a  4-0 win over Montreal.

The win is the first win at BMO Field for Montreal since the year 2020, it is also their 16th win of the season and their 52nd point which broke the team record for most wins in a season and most points in a regular season. CF Montreal will be back in action at home on September 9th when they host the Columbus Crew.
