Arnor Traustason Leaves the Revs to Return to Sweden

It was a supremely busy transfer window for the New England Revolution. There were a number of ins and outs and despite the MLS window having closed, another sale has been made. Icelandic international Arnor Traustason has made the move back to Europe. The club has confirmed that he has departed, with Swedish IFK Norrköping his destination.

Looking Back on His Time in New England

Arnor Traustason first arrived in New England in the March of 2021. It wasn’t a particularly long tenure with the defending Supporters’ Shield champions but he made an impact all the same. Having played in the likes of Iceland, Austria and Greece, he is now going back to a familiar stomping ground.

The Icelandic midfielder “registered 15 appearances, including five starts, with one assist in the 2022 campaign.” Bruce Arena has always spoken highly of him but has still been used sparingly this term. The likes of Sebastian Lletget and Tommy McNamara were ahead of him in the pecking order and of course, the former has also departed Gillette Stadium as well.

In the 2021 MLS season, whilst Adam Buksa and Gustavo Bou led the team in goals, Arnor Traustason was towards the rear. He finished the campaign on two goals, tied with McNamara, Emmanuel Boateng, Brandon Bye and Matt Polster. This wasn’t exactly his game and his time with the Revs never hit a peak. As was the case with Lletget, he was unable to slot into the XI smoothly and so didn’t get as many minutes as would otherwise have been the case.

What Is Next for Arnor Traustason?

Nearly a decade ago now, Arnor Traustason joined IFK Norrköping in Sweden and went on to lift the Allsvenskan title in 2015. His career is going full circle now as the 29-year-old returns to that club. The official reports point toward this move taking place due to the player wanting to be closer to home and his family in Europe.

They weren’t the only Swedish team he played for though having joined the Revolution from Malmo. He was never an established player in New England but was much-loved just the same. His time here will be remembered fondly, particularly for last year’s record-breaking regular season.
