AUSTIN – Austin FC hosted LA Galaxy for a later afternoon Mother’s Day match. It was a hot day in the capital with hydration breaks in affect.

Mark Delgado goal lifts LA Galaxy to 1-0 win at Austin FC

The first half was open with both teams playing direct at times. Six minutes in, Mark Delgado picked off a pass from Ethan Finlay in Austin’s defensive third. He took a touch towards the middle of the pitch then shot from over 30 yards out. The ball went past goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell, off the post, and in.

Austin created chances through their press and energy. Their best shot attempt came on a set piece in the 29th. Sebastián Driussi was first to a ball that was flicked on in front of goal, but he skied it. Chicharito Hernandez missed a sitter just before halftime from inside the six on a cross from Kévin Cabral.

Overall, the game was sloppy yet entertaining. Both teams were aggressive but ultimately careless with the ball. The ball got into good areas but quality in the final pass was lacking at times. There were near-misses a plenty.

The home side did a lot of huffing and puffing in the second half, but most of their chances were off target. Alex Ring and Ruben Gabrielsen both had chances on headers. Driussi hit the post on a direct free kick in the 89th. A minute later Danny Hoesen put a ball just wide of the near post on a cross from Driussi.

The match ended 1-0 to the Galaxy.

Three Key Takeaways:

Quantity but no quality: Austin had 13 shots but only two of them were on goal. The Galaxy had nine and three, respectively. Attacking sequences were rushed the execution was not there.

Delgado opens account: With both teams shoots for volume but lacking quality, this game came down to a brilliant individual moment. Delgado was fantastic in recognizing the opportunity and acting quickly to beat Tarbell from distance.

A second home loss: This is just Austin’s second loss of the year at home. The other loss was to Portland Timbers. There was also a home draw to Seattle Sounders and had a similar narrative. Seattle scored early, Austin had a lot of the ball and chances in volume. They could not execute well enough. There were lessons to be learned indeed.
