MLS Postpones Colorado Rapids and Sporting KC Match: What it Means

Major League Soccer put out the following statement:

Major League Soccer today announced that the match between the Colorado Rapids and Sporting Kansas City on Sept. 27 at DICK’s Sporting Goods Park has been postponed. One player and three staff members of the Colorado Rapids received confirmed positive tests for COVID-19 during a series of tests conducted on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 24-25. Based on the number of positive test results, Major League Soccer has postponed the match to allow for additional testing and evaluation.
All other members of the Colorado Rapids are asymptomatic, have received negative test results for COVID-19 and are following MLS medical protocol.
Further details regarding when this match will be played will be announced at a later date.
This is the right decision from a health and human safety standpoint. MLS continues to take measured approaches to these situations and putting safety and reason above playing games.
Both teams have games scheduled for the next two weekends as well as Wednesday, October 7. It is unlikely this game gets rescheduled sometime in the next two weeks. The MLS Phase Two schedule does have midweek openings the week of Oct. 19 and Nov. 2.
This game could be rescheduled then. With the Rapids welcoming fans back to DSG Park, this could become a fifth home game with fans during Phase Two.
This news could have an effect on the San Jose Earthquakes, who played Colorado this past Wednesday at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Based on the five day incubation period for COVID, the club will be looking to see if anyone tests positive as late as this Monday.
This is the first game to be postponed due to COVID since league play resumed after the MLS is Back tournament.
