COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (June 28, 2019) – The Colorado Rapids unbeaten streak is alive and well. Behind a Danny Wilson goal on a set piece, Colorado handed Los Angeles FC just their second loss of the season.
Laughing in the Burgundy Rain: Danny Wilson Goal Gives LAFC Second Loss
Los Angles had most of the ball in this game, trying to pass on the ground through the Rapids. Colorado remained compact and marked very tightly in the final third. Bob Bradley’s side appeared to target left back Sam Vines often, but the Homegrown defender was up to the task when marking Carlos Vela on his own.
The home side relied primarily on the counter. When they created a turnover with space up field, Kei Kamara and Andre Shinyashiki made runs for the box. They forced Pablo Sisniega into playing the ball often.
Colorado opened the scoring on a corner in the 49th minute. Jack Price sent an out-swinging cross that Danny Wilson rose up and won unchallenged. He headed it into the back of the net off the keeper’s hand.
Moments later, the game was delayed for an hour due to lightning in the vicinity of the stadium. The game resumed in the 52nd minute. LAFC were the better side to start, with Adrien Perez subbing on and helping create a few chances.
Perez had a golden opportunity in the 70th minute. Diego Rossi got past Keegan Rosenberry and found Perez right in front of goal, but he shot the ball over the bar by a good distance.
LAFC couldn’t muster a response and the match ended 1-0.

Three Takeaways:
Set pieces six-pack: For the sixth straight game in all competitions, the Rapids scored on a set piece. This team has become deadly on corners with several players contributing and Jack Price providing good service. Danny Wilson got his second goal of the season. The counter attack wasn’t very effective in this game, but Conor Casey has a solid second weapon now.
Lightning changes the game: All the adrenaline Colorado got by scored dissipated once the game was delayed. LAFC had time to regroup and change a few things tactically. They also made two substitutions at the restart. It gave them life. The Rapids could have pushed for a second, but the lightning allowed Bob Bradley’s side to get back in the match.
Rapids fullbacks impersonate Crystal Dunn: LAFC had the advantage on the wings in this game on both ends of the field. Despite a constant barrage from Vela and Rossi, Vines and Rosenberry did well. Just hours after Crystal Dunn stood tall in the Women’s World Cup, two fullbacks who have underperformed at times this year got the job done against the best wide attacking duo in MLS.
