Foxborough, Massachusetts (May 9, 2019) — A beautiful Spring day across New England just got even better for New England Revolution fans. Former head coach Brad Friedel has been fired.
Friedel the former American international was appointed in November 2017. Meanwhile, he leaves the club rock bottom of the Eastern Conference.
Brad Friedel fired by New England Revolution; Mike Lapper named interim
New England Revolution released a statement detailing the departure.
As a player, Freidel made over 400 appearances in the English Premier League. However, before being appointed as the Revolution manager, Freidel was the United States Men’s National Team U-19 coach.
His dismissal comes after a horrendous run of form, with New England conceding 18 goals across four games. In what will go down as Friedel’s last game, the Revolution gave up five goals to the Chicago Fire. Meanwhile, the Revolution have yet to score in their last three matches. This season, New England is ranked second worst for goals scored per match at 0.9. Meanwhile, they are also second worst for goals conceded per match at 2.5.
Mike Lapper will be taking over as an intern coach. The former U.S. international defender spent nine seasons as an assistant at Columbus Crew SC. However, he joined the Revolution two seasons ago as an assistant coach also in the fall 2017.

Thoughts on Friedel’s firing
However, Friedel’s first coaching appointment in Major League Soccer can only be considered a failure.
Freidel when he first joined talked about being excited to be apart of the New England Revolution project. After being given a quality Designated Player in Carles Gil, Friedel’s possession based game along with his inability to adapt to the opposition tactics failed him.
A series of uninspired performances leaves New England sitting bottom of the Eastern Conference. Now, the Revolution should only go up from here.
