Report: Sporting KC Sign Andreu Fontás Ahead of Transfer Deadline

Andreu Fontás

Kansas City, Kan. (August 7, 2018)- Sporting KC have reportedly come to an agreement with Spanish Center-Back, Andreu Fontás.

Sam McDowell, of the Kansas City Star broke news that Sporting had officially come to an agreement on Fontás contract on Tuesday afternoon. The club has yet to announce the deal, but it is assumed to have an announcement on it sometime within the next few days.

With the MLS Secondary Transfer Window Deadline approaching the “24 hours left” time frame, Sporting KC have decided to leave it late in getting business done. Yesterday they announced the acquisition of Krisztian Nemeth via trade with the New England Revolution.

Now, Fontás will join them as well on a free transfer from La Liga side, Celta de Vigo. Fontás has 122 games played in La Liga between Celta, FC Barcelona, and RCD Mallorca. He has also logged close to 1,000 minutes in the Champions League and Europa League.

Fontás is listed at 6’1″ and his pedigree from the Barcelona Academy fits into a target that Sporting KC have had on many players since Peter Vermes took over the team. His playing style and strengths are described as a ball playing center back and good tackler, but lacks some aerial defensive ability. He is also considered able to play as a defensive midfielder, but with only 21 career appearances there, it’s hard to consider him a legitimate option there.

This is potentially not the only move that Sporting KC have left up there sleeve. Early on in the offseason they were reported to be interested in acquiring a left back and defensive midfielder for depth purposes, along with the acquisition of a striker. So far, only the striker need has been filled. They created, then filled the center-back need with the termination of Emilliano Amor’s loan deal. Peter Vermes was asked today if they will end up making a few more moves and he said this:

Time will tell if they add anything more within the next time frame. It does seem like the bulk of major moves that Sporting KC were going to make, have gotten done. We’ll see if they fill any of their remaining “needs” via intra-league moves.
