FC Cincinnati Acquire Fanendo Adi and Fatai Alashe

FC Cincinnati is due to announce a historic duo of trades according to league sources, making Fanendo Adi their first designated player in club history. Adi was acquired via a trade with the Portland Timbers. The two will finish the season in the USL with Cincinnati and begin play with the club in MLS in 2019.

Fanendo Adi joined the Portland Timbers on loan from FC Kobenhaven (Copenhagen) ahead of the 2014 season. The Timbers officially bought him from Copenhagen during the ensuing summer transfer window, for roughly $590k. In 126 appearances with the Timbers, Adi has bagged 54 goals and 12 assists and helped them to the 2015 MLS Cup Title.

Fatai Alashe is the other player acquired for FC Cincinnati. Alashe, a defensive-minded midfielder, had recently fallen out of favor in San Jose. Clearly, he and manager Mikael Stahre didn’t quite see eye to eye after a recent spat over Alashe being subbed on for only four minutes at the end of the half, not being told at half he wasn’t going to come back out, and then subbed off before the start of the second half. Alashe didn’t make a return to the bench or field for the Earthquakes as they said he had a “groin issue.”

Both players could be major contributors to the MLS team in 2019. Adi is certainly a lock to start as the team’s No. 9 up top, having proven himself with the Timbers including winning MLS Cup with the club in 2015. Alashe’s role and position could be a bit more in doubt. The midfielder has played at center back at times for the Quakes and has trouble sticking in the lineup regularly the last few years. He could be a bench/depth option rather than a starter in 2019.
