Podcast ( July 3, 2018) – Hello Rapids Fans! The Rapids got another win over the weekend? Rabbi and Red are here to break everything down and make sense of this newfound sense of confidence(?). We do Good Thing, Bad Thing, Big Thing on the win against Vancouver Whitecaps FC. The guys then take a look at the Seattle Sounders FC and Montreal Impact FC matches this coming week.

Holding The High Line: Interview with Professor John Eric Goff

We also have a very special and nerdy interview in the second half of the episode. Matt sits down with John Eric Goff, Professor of Physics at the University of Lynchburg and author of Gold Medal Physics: The Science of Sports.

You may remember Mark having fun with the term “thermal bonding” and soccer ball physics a few episodes ago. Professor Goff does work on soccer ball physics and sports physics in general. We talk about the Telstar 18, the differences between playing soccer at altitude and sea level, the World Cup, and much much more.

If you’d like to learn more about topics Professor Goff discusses on the show and researches, check out his blog, Facebook page, faculty page, peer-reviewed publications, and Youtube work. Our interest in interviewing him started with his work with the podcast Playing with Science and his book. Matt highly recommends both.

Matt Pollard is the Managing Editor of Last Word on Soccer and an engineer by day. A Colorado Convert, he started covering the Colorado Rapids as a credentialed member of the press in 2016, though he’s watched MLS since it started. When he’s not watching or writing about soccer, he’s being an outdoorsman (mostly skiing and hiking) in this beautiful state or trying a new beer. For some reason, he thought that starting a podcast with Mark was a good idea and he can’t figure out how to stop this madness. He also hosts Last Word SC Radio. Mark Goodman, aka the Rapids Rabbi, moved to Colorado in 2011. Shortly thereafter he went to Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, saw Lee Nguyen dribble a ball with the silky smoothness of liquid chocolate cascading into a Bar Mitzvah fountain, and promptly fell head over heels in love with domestic soccer. When not watching MLS or coaching U8 soccer, he’s generally studying either Talmud or medieval biblical exegesis. Which explains why he watches so much MLS, probably. He writes about the Rapids for Around MLS and covers the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the USL for Last Word on Soccer. He also writes for American Soccer Analysis. Follow him on Twitter @rapidsrabbi.
