Sporting KC Dynamo

HOUSTON, TX. (June 9, 2018) – Thanks to goals from Mauro Manotas and Tomas Martinez, Houston Dynamo run over Colorado Rapids, who played the entire second half down a man due to a red card to Yannick Boli.

Orange Blitz: Houston Dynamo run over 10-man Colorado Rapids 2-0

From the opening whistle, it was all Houston Dynamo. The Rapids maintained a defensive stance in a mostly 5-4-1. Houston had 71% possession in the first half, outshooting the visitors 10-0. DaMarcus Beasley was active overlapping on the flank to whip crosses into the box.

Tomas Martinez opened the scoring in the 30th minute. Houston pressed the Rapids as they were building out of the back. Martinez striped Johan Blomberg of the ball, dribbled through the center backs to shoot, then buried the rebound.

Five minutes later, Beasley was brought down in the box by Blomberg to earn a PK. Forward Mauro Manotas stepped up and converted, sending goalkeeper Tim Howard the wrong way. Just before halftime, Yannick Boli was given a straight red card for an arm to the face of defender Leonardo.

The second half was relatively uneventful with Houston comfortably up two goals and up a man. Colorado got two half chances on restarts with Jack Price shooting on goal. In the 77th, Houston had an opportunity that ended in a shot off the post. Manotas hit the post in the final minutes as well.

The final score was 2-0.

Three takeaways:

Rapid collapse: From the getgo, the Rapids were outclassed in this match. They seemed to be playing for a 0-0 draw from the start with little intention to go forward and attack. The abhorrent first half was punctuated by Boli’s red card foul out of frustration. No team in MLS needs the World Cup break more than Colorado Rapids.

Houston injury concerns: Houston Manager Wilmer Cabrera had to make two unanticipated substitutions in this game. Just 25 minutes in Andrew Wenger had to be subbed out with a leg injury. In the second half, Boniek Garcia also had to exit prematurely. Neither of these hurt the Dynamo in terms of getting a result, but if they are both starters for Cabrera. Put a pin in this to see if either will be out long term.

An ignominious club record: The Colorado Rapids have now lost eight league matches in a row and nine in all competition. Both of those are club records. This is a bad soccer team right now and it doesn’t seem to be getting better anytime soon.
