Peter Vermes signs contract extension with Sporting KC through 2023

Vermes has been the head coach at Sporting KC since 2009, after taking over the technical director role in 2006. In his time with the club, he has guided them to four major trophies: three Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups (2012, 2015, 2017) and the 2013 MLS Cup Championships. In total, he has been the manager for four of the seven major trophies the club has won all time. He ranks second among active MLS coaches in total hardware.

“I am extremely thankful for the opportunity to continue to lead this club. Our ownership group has shown tremendous ambition over the last decade, and I am proud to be involved in a first-class organization that continues to grow and evolve at Sporting KC,” Vermes said.

As the longest-tenured manager in MLS, he has led SKC to the playoffs in seven consecutive seasons, a club record. He is currently the sixth-winningest coach in league history, with a 121-93-76 regular-season record and a 150-108-86 record across all competitions.

“Peter has become one of the most successful managers in the history of Major League Soccer, and we are delighted to extend his contract at the club. This long-term deal shows commitment from the organization and from Peter, who has helped the club accomplish remarkable things on and off the field for the last decade. He has guided the first team to four major championships and seven straight playoff appearances while playing an integral role in the development of the Sporting KC Academy, Swope Park Rangers and world-class facilities such as Children’s Mercy Park, Swope Soccer Village and Pinnacle,” said Sporting Club co-owner Mike Illig.

Vermes is originally from Delran Township, New Jersey. He played professionally from 1988-2002, becoming the first American to play in the first divisions in Hungary (1989) and the Netherlands (1990) and later spent time in the Spanish second division. Internationally, Vermes played 67 times for the United States Men’s National Team and was a part of the 1990 World Cup team.

Vermes returned to the States as a player in 1996 for the inaugural season of Major League Soccer. He joined Kansas City as a player in 2000, helping them win the double in the Supporter’s Shield and MLS Cup.

Kansas City take on Atlanta United FC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Wednesday at 7:30 P.M. EST.
