Editorial (October 13, 2017) – It’s been a rough week for soccer in America. For fans of both the United States Men’s National Team and the Colorado Rapids, it’s been a rough week and a rough year. The soccer ether could use a good laugh, and I happened to find one on Twitter this morning.

Laughing Out Loud: David Moyes “Rumored” To Be In Talks With Colorado Rapids

A London-based tabloid (they look like a tabloid) Daily Express believes that David Moyes is interested in the Head Coach position open with the Scottish National Team. The former Everton and Manchester United manager has supposedly garnered interest from other English and European based club teams as well.

While he is interested in the Scotland job, supposedly “it’s understood Moyes, 54, is attracting interest from Major League Soccer, with Colorado Rapids one of the teams keen on landing him,” per the article.

Moyes last coached Sunderland A.F.C. and re-signed after the club was relegated at the end of the 2016-17 season. His only coaching experience outside the U.K. was in 2015-16 with Real Sociedad in Spain.

Laughing Out Loud:

This rumor is hilariously ridiculous. When he was with the Toffies, Moyes was reportedly making around 4 million pounds a year. That’s about $5.3 million per year, which would have made him the highest paid coach in MLS as far as we know. That’s a steep price to pay for any club, let alone one on a tight budget.

Furthermore, managers from the U.K. have a poor track record in MLS. Owen Coyle crashed out with the Houston Dynamo last season. Adrian Heath is still learning the ropes of MLS after his time in Orlando and now Minnesota United FC. Numerous other foreign managers with little understand of MLS and its crazy rules fade within two years or so.

Again, It’s A Tabloid:

Last Word on Soccer reached out to a few people (partially for giggles) to see if this rumor had an traction. My first reaction was this was nonsensical. I don’t trust the source, that much. A representative from the club declined to comment on any specific candidates.

If you ask me, Moyes is in no way a good fit for what the Colorado Rapids are looking for in their next Head Coach. Even if he was, he’d be way overpriced. The man has a number of other opportunities, and unless he really wants to learn to ski, he’s best suited staying in Europe to be a club coach.

That doesn’t mean foreign tabloids aren’t fun sometimes.
