LA Galaxy Sign Defender Bradley Diallo: Inexperienced But Adds Help At Left Back

The LA Galaxy have signed defender Bradley Diallo to a first team contract. This gives the team another option at left back.

CARSON, CA (February 28, 2017) – The LA Galaxy have added some help to the back line through the LA Galaxy II pipeline. The club signed defender Bradley Diallo to an MLS contract. Diallo is a French International and has played 46 consecutive games for Los Dos in three seasons.

LA Galaxy Sign Defender Bradley Diallo: Inexperienced But Adds Help At Left Back

The Galaxy were getting pretty lean at defense, especially at left back. Leonardo and A.J. DeLaGarza left in the off-season for the Houston Dynamo. Robbie Rogers could have a long-term injury. Ashley Cole got hurt last week and could be out a month.

That left the Galaxy with Rafa Garcia and Dave Romney as the starting outside backs. Garcia is a converted defensive midfielder and is learning the position. Romney has played 15 MLS games.

Diallo might not be MLS ready just yet, but he’s a young body and a versatile piece. Romney is probably still the starter at left back, but this gives head coach Curt Onalfo another option. Diallo can come off the bench as needed. He might also be given a chance if Romney struggles early.

“Bradley has continued to show his value as a member with Galaxy II over the last three seasons,” said LA Galaxy General Manager Pete Vagenas. “He is a versatile player and will provide depth along our backline. He has proven that he can play at a high level while training with the Galaxy this preseason and we are excited to add him to our roster.”

The 26-year-old is well traveled but hasn’t played that many games. He started his career in his home town with Olympique de Marseille, before making stops in the lower division of England and Belgium. He came to Los Dos in their inaugural season. Prior that, he played only 25 first team matches in his career.

That said, he proved to be reliable for Onalfo in the USL. If anyone can make him a useful player in MLS, it’s the new Galaxy first team boss.

Diallo does have one other concern. He missed almost the entire 2016 season due to a preseason ACL injury. He hasn’t played in a competitive match since. The Galaxy medical staff has probably evaluated him extensively. The front office wouldn’t have signed him if he wasn’t fully recovered.

This move gives the Galaxy a safety net at left back. It gives another younger and cheaper player an opportunity at the first team level.
