LA Galaxy #OutOfTheBlue Kit: Simple And Too Similar To Old Secondary Kit

Opinion (February 12, 2017) – The LA Galaxy debuted their new kit #OutOfTheBlue this week. It will serve as their secondary jersey for the 2017 MLS season. While the shirt is very different from their primary look, it does mimic their old secondary kit. It’s also really plain.

For those of you who missed it, here it is:

The thing is, it looks a lot like the secondary kit of the last two seasons. While fans might not have liked how well the Galaxy played when wearing that shirt, it was a solid look. It was very different from the club’s primary look of the white shirt with the sash. The blue with the fade across the chest was solid, and those are usually hit or miss. The gold accents on the sleeves and at the waste were solid.

There’s nothing wrong with sticking with that shade of blue as the main color. The problem with these is that they’re too similar and more plane. The tri-blend across the front of the shirt is a nice up close look. One thing MLS has done a better job with jerseys in recent years has been those details: Make a shirt that looks good from the stands and in close ups on TV.

From far away, this kit just looks like the last secondary kit, but with the fade colored in with the same shade. Nothing really sets it apart much from its predecessor. It’s simple and it’s safe. Some of the secondary kits in the league have been out there, and hit or miss.

But it’s nice to see clubs go outside of the box and push the boundaries of design and patterns. It’s not the primary kit, so clubs aren’t ruining historic or recognizable looks. The Galaxy didn’t do that here though. My reaction is a solid “meh.”

Maybe they’ll do something different, cool, or symbolic with their new jersey next season.
