CARSON, CA (February 9, 2017) – LA Galaxy II Head Coach Mike Muñoz has appointed his coaching staff for the 2017 USL season. Former MLS and LA Galaxy player Laurent Courtois will be his Assistant Coach. Former Jamaican goalkeeper coach Claine Plummer will be the Goalkeeper Coach for Los Dos. Both of these moves put Muñoz in position to mentor and help LA Galaxy II players grow.
LA Galaxy II Coaching Staff: Built To Mentor And Develop
Courtois comes to the club with a wealth of experience as a player. The 38-year-old Frenchman has experience playing all over Europe. He came to MLS in 2011, playing 33 games with Chivas USA. He played six games for the Galaxy in 2013 and spent 2014 with Los Dos. Even at his advanced age, he had some good moments. He showed some Coach on the Field qualities as well. This will be Courtois’s first professional coaching experience of any kind.
“Laurent is a great addition to our staff, not only because of his extensive experience in soccer, but also his experience with soccer in Los Angeles,” coach Muñoz said. “With our goalkeeping position, Claine’s wide range of experience and success coaching soccer at the youth and collegiate level is going to make him a very effective piece of this staff. We are excited to add both Laurent and Claine as we continue our preparation for the start of the 2017 season,” he added.
Plummer is a Costa Rican international and played four years at Cal State LA. He played for A.D. Limonese professionally in the Costa Rican first division. He has a wealth of experience as a goalkeeper coach throughout MLS at various levels. He spent to with the RSL development academy and the Chivas USA first team. Most recently, he coached the Jamaica National Team to a Gold Cup Final in 2015. That was with Ryan Thompson, who played in the USL at the time, starting.
Courtois comes in with no professional coaching experience, but is familiar with the club and their mission. Furthermore, he finished his playing career as a veteran presence and an example in the locker room. Under the direction of Muñoz he can become a good coach and mentor to the young players.
Plummer has a wealth of coaching experience. His work with Jamaica in the 2015 Gold Cup shows he can get goalkeepers to excel and play at a higher level in the critical moments.
Both of these coaches are fit to mentor and coach young professionals to help them progress. Combined with Muñoz’s knowledge and experience with the academy, the Galaxy are in position to streamline the step from the academy, to Los Dos, to the first team.
