CARSON, CA (September 8, 2016) – The LA Galaxy announced today that former Designated Player and American International Landon Donovan has come out of retirement and signed with the club. Donovan will return for the remainder of the 2016 MLS season.

Rumors started circulating early today that this move could be in the works. It was even reported that the transfer of Nigel de Jong was key to making this happen.
On the move, Donovan said “I have decided to come out of retirement to play the rest of the 2016 MLS season with the LA Galaxy. An opportunity opened up and after discussing it with those close to me, it felt like the right decision to return to a club that has meant so much to me. I am very excited to be back and I will do everything I can to help the Galaxy, both on and off the field.”
Donovan will begin training with the club this Friday and will be available for selection for Sunday’s home match against Orlando City SC. It’s unclear how much Donovan will make on his short term contract. He could be a TAM or DP level player if his contract were prorated for a full MLS season.
The 34-year-old holds the record for a player with six MLS Cups. He also holds the MLS record for goals (144) and assists (136). He is the most capped player in U.S. Men’s National Team history with 157 appearances and 57 goals.
It’s unclear where head coach Bruce Arena will play him, but he could be out wide or up as a striker with Giovani dos Santos and/or Robbie Keane.
