AEW Dynamite is a little bit different this Wednesday. Why? Because it’s not AEW Dynamite at all. That’s right. This Wednesday (7/1/20) is All Elite Wrestling‘s second annual AEW Fyter Fest event; featuring a stacked card spread out over two weeks of television. What does this Wednesday’s “Night 1” have in store? Let’s find out!
Jurassic Express (Jungle Boy & Luchasaurus) vs MJF & Wardlow
Kicking things off is a match months in the making. Jurassic Express (Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus) take on the team of MJF and Wardlow. On last week’s episode of AEW Dynamite, Wardlow was successful in his monstrous lumberjack match brawl with Luchasaurus. Additionally, back at Double or Nothing 2020, MJF successfully pinned Jungle Boy. You would think that the odds, therefore, are in favor of MJF and Wardlow. You would be mistaken. Though Jurassic Express both lost their singles attempts at silencing the duo, they are a stronger, more cohesive unit. This match could go either way and it’s certain to be fun.
Santana & Ortiz vs Private Party (Marq Quen & Isaiah Kassidy)
In November 2019, Private Party (Isaiah Kassidy and Marq Quen) defeated Santana & Ortiz. That single blemish on their record will irk the Inner Circle‘s experienced tag team. In recent months, they have feuded with – and have been tormented by – various forms of Matt Hardy. Hilariously, Matt Hardy terrorized the duo during Double or Nothing 2020‘s “Stadium Stampede” match. Therefore, Matt Hardy being in Private Party’s corner provides Santana & Ortiz with extra motivation to beat Private Party and silence the “Broken Warrior” once and for all.
AEW Women’s Championship: Hikaru Shida (c) vs Penelope Ford (w/ Kip Sabian)
At Double or Nothing 2020, Hikaru Shida brought Nyla Rose‘s reign of terror to an end. In a superb bout of women’s wrestling, Shida proved that – right now – she is the best in AEW’s women division. Penelope Ford pinned Shida a couple of weeks ago, after Kip Sabian distracted the women’s champion and the referee – allowing Ford to take her out with the championship. Pin the champion, earn a title shot. At Fyter Fest, Ford has an opportunity to bring a premature end to Shida’s reign.
AEW World Tag Team Championships: Kenny Omega & Hangman Page (c) vs Best Friends (Chuck Taylor & Trent)
You may remember that a few months back, Best Friends (Trent and Chuck Taylor) pinned the team of Kenny Omega and Michael Nakazawa. In doing so, they proved their friendship knows no bounds and the team name “Best Friends” is justified. Now they have a real opportunity to cement their claim to the moniker – by defeating Kenny Omega once more, though this time with tag team partner, Hangman Page and with the AEW Tag Team titles on the line. The tag team division has become crowded in recent months, with the likes of FTR, the Young Bucks, SCU, Dark Order, Private Party, Santana & Ortiz and Le Sex Gods (Chris Jericho and Sammy Guevara) all bolstering the division. That’s not even including the Lucha Brothers (Pentagon Jr and Rey Fenix) who are out through COVID restrictions and injury. Do Best Friends deserve to be the kingpins of such a talented division? If the power of friendship overcomes Page and Omega at AEW Fyter Fest, then they will have the opportunity to prove it.
TNT Championship: Cody (C) vs Jake Hager
Night 1 of Fyter Fest 2020 is headlined by Cody (with Arn Anderson) and Jake Hager, with the TNT Championship being on the line. Cody has been running the “Open Challenge” gimmick since becoming the inaugural champion at Double or Nothing 2020. In Hager, he meets his toughest opponent yet. Despite suffering a loss against AEW Champion Jon Moxley at the last event, Jake Hager remains one of the more dominant and legitimate men on the roster. What he lacks in personality he makes up for in sheer brutishness. Will he be the one to dethrone Cody, the man who overcome “The Murder Hawk”, Lance Archer?
