The world of pro wrestling and lucha libre was saddened on Friday to the news that the masked luchador Discovery, who worked in Mexico in the 1980s and 1990s before heading to Chicago to become a trainer, had passed away after a battle with cancer.

The man who would become Discovery made his wrestling debut in 1980, and by the early 1990s was working with Universal Wrestling Association (UWA) and AAA Lucha Libre as Gamma. In 1995, he joined the stable Los Cadetes del Espacio in AAA, alongside Venum, Ludxor, Frisbee, Boomerang, and Super Nova (not the ECW Superstar of the same name). In 1997, Gamma, alongside Super Nova and Venum, represented the stable in the WWF, appearing on Monday Night Raw on March 24 and Shotgun Saturday Night the following week.
By the mid-2000s, he had relocated to the American Midwest, where he was working with Chicago’s GALLI Lucha Libre, where he began to work as a trainer to many of the area’s talents. He would also work with Chicago’s Empresa de Lucha Libre Mexicana (ELLMEX) and Freelance Wrestling, and in 2016 would join another new lucha company in Chicago, Lucha Libre Total (LLT). He’s a former National Mexico Lightweight Champion (274 days) and National Mexico Welterweight Champion (613 days).
Discovery taught me to keep on fighting, don’t look back. He was one of my best lucha coaches in chicago.. I’m glad he was able to listen to my voice, and tell him thank you and i love him. I will dearly miss him….

Absolutely gutted by the news of the passing of Discovery.
Disco was such an influential part of the Chicago Indie scene, teaching the Lucha style to countless wrestlers, being a certified legend & when he’d turn it on, he’d move better in the ring than most!#ThankYouDiscovery pic.twitter.com/NAsGwG9Y8a

My original lucha trainer, Discovery, passed away today.
His legacy will live on through the countless students he trained in the beautiful style of lucha libre.
His lessons were tough but effective, and he believed in so many of us when we barely believed in ourselves. pic.twitter.com/qq3WBHPQ7a

"You can do" – Discovery.
No one ever believed in their students more than Discovery. You really believed in yourself, because he really believed in you. He thought you could do anything and so did you. I'll be grateful for you always. Until we meet again ♥️ R.I.P. Discovery pic.twitter.com/e18dF1BW14— Storm Grayson (@stormgraysonPW) May 15, 2020
