In a shocking turn of events just a week out from WrestleMania 36, Roman Reigns has been ruled out of his Universal Championship match against Goldberg. First reported by Pro Wrestling Sheet, Reigns pulled out of the match and any match in the near future due to concerns with the COVID-19 virus. Reigns is just over a year removed from entering remission after his second fight with leukemia. Due to the virus risk against people with underlying health issues, this makes all the sense in the world for Reigns to drop out of WrestleMania. As cited by the Pro Wrestling Sheet, the WWE understood his wishes and pulled him out of the match. This will be the first WrestleMania Reigns misses since joining the main roster in November of 2012.
“The Big Dog” was set to seemingly compete in the main event one of the two nights, April 4 and 5, in a “Battle of the Spears” match against current Universal Champion Goldberg. The match came about when Roman Reigns called next the day after Goldberg won the title at WWE Super Showdown.

It was revealed that Goldberg will still defend the Universal Championship at WrestleMania 36, but his opponent remains a mystery and could be revealed as early as this Friday night on SmackDown. Questions are sure to arise when it comes to “who’s next” for the Universal Champion, with no clear answer at this time. What matters most here is that Roman Reigns is officially out of WrestleMania and for good reason. It would not be too shocking if they deliver this match a little ways down the road if Goldberg is willing to return once again, or of course, he successfully defends his Universal Championship at WrestleMania against his mystery opponent.
Possible Opponents
Among the names that come to mind on the SmackDown roster is Braun Strowman, Daniel Bryan, Sheamus, and the recently returning Jeff Hardy. Matt Riddle‘s name will be brought into the equation plenty within the next 24 hours as well. It is only a matter of time before the world learns what is next for WrestleMania.
