A Japanese women’s wrestler (joshi) legend returns to All Elite Wrestling (AEW) on Wednesday night, when Emi Sakura, a star with influential All Japan Women’s Wrestling (AJW), returns for the first time since AEW Double or Nothing to compete once again, when she teams with Bea Priestley against AEW Women’s Champion Riho and
Emi Sakura debuted in 1995 for International Wrestling Association Japan before moving on to AJW and Frontier Martial-Arts Wrestling (FMW). In 2006, when the ioshi scene had lost some of its biggest names and companies, Emi Sakura helped to form Ice Ribbon where she would discover her talent for training. As a trainer Sakura has had a big impact on the joshi scene as she has trained many extremely talented women, passing on her experience and technical expertise. She left Ice Ribbon in 2011 and set up the unique Gatoh Move, where she has spent the rest of her career as a wrestler, trainer, and owner. Sakura has a wealth of experience and a bright personality, but don’t let that fool you she can manipulate her opponent’s body in so many ways.
As well as being a huge name in the joshi scene, Emi is also a veteran of the UK indie scene. Since 2011, she has been a huge part of Pro Wrestling EVE, the top European women’s promotion. She won the EVE Championship in 2012 and has remained a huge part of the company ever since, facing most of the top stars from within the UK scene.
She made her North American debut earlier this year, when she took part in the first AEW PPV, Double or Nothing, in a 6-woman tag match teaming with Yuka Sakazaki and fellow joshi legend Aja Kong, against Hikaru Shida, Ryo Mizunami and now AEW Women’s Champion Riho. Now she’s back on AEW Dynamite, once again facing her Double or Nothing rival Riho.
