Preview: Freelance Wrestling – Get Over or Die Trying (8/16/19)

Chicago’s Freelance Wrestling is celebrating their 50th show as a company since their formation in 2014. Since then, Freelance has added another unique voice to the loaded Chicago area indie scene, combining hard-hitting action with extreme athleticism and carving out their own niche in a very competitive market. On Friday night, Get Over or Die Trying airs live on IndependentWrestling.tv at 10pm EST.

Kris Chambers vs. Atticus Cogar vs. Dave Turner

There’s been a flurry of Canadian talents making waves in the US Midwest the past year and 18-year veteran Kris Chambers made his own Freelance debut last year. The 34-year old has worked a variety of Canadian indies over his career, including Toronto’s Superkick’D and Windsor’s Border City Wrestling (BCW), as well as stops in IWA Mid South and Germany’s Westside Xtreme Wrestling (wXw). Ohio’s Atticus Cogar is a 22-year old on the rise, a regular with Pennsylvania’s International Wrestling Cartel (IWC) and Ohio’s Premier Championship Wrestling (PCW), who made his Freelance debut earlier this year. The skull-faced Dave Turner, from the state of Washington, is making his Freelance debut after being a star in the Pacific Northwest for the past eight years, including a run as the 3-2-1 BATTLE Solid Steel Champion.

Scramble Match: Gregory Iron vs. Gringo Loco vs. Chris Logan vs. BMD vs. Anton Alexiev vs. Cam Cole vs. Will Allday vs. San Andres

A huge scramble match goes down on Friday night featuring a couple of Midwest veterans in Chicago’s own Gringo Loco (now a national star with Major League Wrestling) and Cleveland’s Gregory Iron. Chris Logan, another Chicago homegrown, is a 12-year veteran of Berwyn Championship Wrestling and Pro Wrestling Blitz making his own Freelance debut. The three vets will be looking to show they still belong when they face a rash of young hungry talents in this one. 22-year old Anton Alexiev is another Canadian breaking into the US from the Canadian indies (he debuted with Freelance last year as well), as is Brett Michael David (BMD), who recently failed in a championship match against Freelance Champion Ethan PageCam Cole is another one making his Freelance debut on Friday night, as the Texas indie star has been a regular on the Texas indies with Booker T’s Reality of Wrestling and Inspire Pro, as is another Texas indie star in Will Allday. Last but not least, San Andres is another Canadian indie wrestler from Superkick’D who’s becoming more frequent with Freelance.

Rickey Shane Page vs. Mark Wheeler

Rickey Shane Page has proven the past few years he’s more than just a hardcore guy, but that doesn’t mean the former Combat Zone Wrestling (CZW) World Champion is getting soft. He’s spent a lot of this year so far in Japan with Big Japan Wrestling, plus working the UK indies with Fight Club PRO, RevPro and PROGRESS amongst others, but he’s back on US soil and looking to cause some damage. His opponent is Canadian indie star Mark Wheeler, a regular with Alpha-1 and Smash Wrestling in Canada, who is expanding into the US indies with Freelance, Glory Pro, Black Label Pro, and Warrior Wrestling.

Darin Corbin Open Challenge

Former Freelance Champion Darin Corbin is without an opponent on Friday night, so he’s issuing an open challenge to anyone in the locker room. Corbin and his Take It Homewreckers have many many enemies in Freelance (and elsewhere), so it will be interesting to see who steps up to Corbin.

Robert Anthony vs. Alex Zayne

A Midwest veteran, Robert Anthony has been a presence in the US indies since 2001. Competing also as Egotistico Fantastico, he’s a former AAW Heavyweight Champion in Chicago, as well as a CZW World Heavyweight Champion and CZW Junior Heavyweight Champion. He’s facing off against one of the hottest indie prospects and breakout stars of 2019 in the high flying Alex Zayne, who went viral on the 4th of July with Game Changer Wrestling and has exploded ever since.

EFFY & Pat Monix vs. Isaias Velazquez & Eye Candy Elliott

The effervescent EFFY is becoming another breakout star of 2019, despite being a veteran of the Florida indies for the past five years. He’s teaming with one of the Midwest’s top prospects in Pat Monix, who is a former IWA Mid South Junior Heavyweight Champion. They’re facing off against two of the very best in Freelance Wrestling, including 2x Freelance Champion Isaias Velazquez. Velazquez is still trying to get himself back into the title hunt, and on Friday he’s pairing up with the reigning Freelance Legacy Champion Eye Candy Elliott to prove that they’re still the future of Freelance Wrestling.

Arik Cannon vs. B-Boy

Two absolute legends of the US indie scene collide in a Midwest vs West Coast encounter. Arik Cannon is originally from Chicago and a veteran of AAW, where he’s a 2x AAW Heritage Champion, as well as being a former IWA Mid South Heavyweight Champion. He now competes out of Minnesota, where he runs F1RST Wrestling. He’s facing one of the innovators of the West Coast offense in B-Boy, one of the names that helped Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG) launch in the early 2000s and has shown no signs of slowing down.

Freelance World Tag Team Championship: Work Horsemen (JD Drake & Anthony Henry) vs. Space Pirates (Shane Sabre & Space Monkey)

With Freelance Champion Ethan Page in Mexico this weekend with IMPACT Wrestling, the Freelance Tag Team titles are the only gold on the line on Friday night. The Work Horsemen have become one of the most reliable tag teams on the US indie circuit, and the former EVOLVE Tag Team Champions are only getting better. Anthony Henry is the reigning Full Impact Pro World Champion, while JD Drake was the WWN Champion for most of the year. The Canadian duo of Space Monkey and Shane Sabre, collectively known as Space Pirates, have been breaking out in the US the past year, where they’ve collected tag team gold in Black Label Pro. They made their Freelance debut last year and now is the time for them to collect more US gold.

I Quit Match: GPA vs. Craig Mitchell

Photo: Freelance Wrestling

GPA and Craig Mitchell have been having a vicious feud for years, going back to their days with Chicago’s GALLI Lucha. It only intensified when the two moved to Freelance, both in singles and tag team action. At Freelance Battle Royale this past May, GPA defeated Mitchell for the latter’s Freelance Underground Championship, but at Freelance vs The World in June, Mitchell evened the now Best of 5 series at 1-1. At last month’s Wet Hot American Supershow 2, GPA teamed with Nas to defeat Mitchell and Chris Castro, to take a 2-1 lead. Now the two are at it one more time, with the series on the line, as they face off in an I Quit Match. Can Mitchell pull out the win to even the series at 2, or will GPA humiliate Mitchell and win the series 3-1?
