Match Point is an on-going series at Last Word on Pro Wrestling, where we look at intriguing matchups in indie wrestling and beyond. They may be dream matches, first-time matchups, or hotly anticipated rematches. Today’s edition looks at a first-time matchup featuring the reigning NXT UK Tag Team Champions, The Grizzled Young Veterans going up against the reigning ICW Tag Team Champions, The Kings of Catch at the debut show for Titanic Wrestling on August 10th, 2019.
This coming Saturday, August 10th, a new professional wrestling promotion will be hosting their inaugural event as Titanic Wrestling make their debut at the Wellington Park Hotel in Belfast, Northern Ireland for Wind Your Neck In. On this night, we will see a huge first time ever clash between two of the UK’s greatest tag teams today when The Grizzled Young Veterans (“Liverpool’s Number One” Zack Gibson and “Mr Mayhem” James Drake) come up against The Kings of Catch (“The Lost Boy” Aspen Faith and “The Renegade” Lewis Girvan) in what is sure to be a match of the year quality contest. Anyone who knows what both of these teams are capable will understand that we’re in for quite the match here.
THE GRIZZLED YOUNG VETERANS
After teaming together on a few separate occasions for promotions including Grand Pro Wrestling (GPW), All Star Wrestling (ASW), and FutureShock Wrestling (FSW), Zack Gibson and James Drake would become one of the biggest teams going in PROGRESS Wrestling ever since they began teaming there in July 2017. Just four months later, The Grizzled Young Veterans as they were now known would capture their first set of titles together, the PROGRESS Tag Team Championships, which they won from CCK (Chris Brookes and Kid Lykos). While becoming three-time PROGRESS champs, The GVY would also expand out to other companies including Target Wrestling, Riptide Wrestling, and ATTACK! Pro Wrestling (ATTACK! Pro), as well as becoming one of the premier teams in WWE‘s NXT UK brand. They were victorious over Moustache Mountain (Trent Seven and Tyler Bate) at January’s NXT UK TakeOver: Blackpool event to be crowned the inaugural NXT UK Tag Team Champions, an accolade that has cemented them as the team to beat when it comes to British wrestling.
THE KINGS OF CATCH
Tag team wrestling in Scotland is undoubtedly at its highest point right now in this writer’s opinion. Teams such as I-Gen (Kieran Kelly and Craig Anthony (sometimes David Devlin too)), The Purge (Krobar and Stevie James), and The Kinky Party (Jack Jester and Sha Samuels) are making the scene as great as can be. But there’s one team that stands above them all, one team that has the whole of the British wrestling scene talking about them. The team in question is The Kings of Catch. Fresh off a long rivalry with each other, Aspen Faith and Lewis Girvan finally put their differences behind them to form The Kings of Catch just over three years ago. Whether they’re competing in Source Wrestling, Discovery Wrestling (DW), or WrestleZone (WZ), the paying audience can always expect a great showing out of them. They’re also the reigning Insane Championship Wrestling (ICW) Tag Team Champions after lifting the gold from The P.O.D (Rampage Brown and Ashton Smith) this past February, a set of titles that has led them to incredible bouts against the likes of The Nine9 (Dickie Divers and Jack Morris) and The Kings of the North (Bonesaw and Damien Corvin). Despite that, this match with the current NXT UK Tag Team Champions is quite possibly the biggest match of their tag team career thus far.
