Why the AJ Styles and Dragon Lee Odd WWE Pairing Has Worked So Well

On the October 20, 2025, episode of Monday Night Raw, the team of AJ Styles and Dragon Lee won the World Tag Team Championships. They beat Finn Balor and JD McDonagh in their first retention attempt since winning the titles. It was only their third match as a tag team. They worked well together and used their strengths to their advantage in order to capture the victory. However, Balor and McDonagh were furious about losing the titles. They got their rematch on the November 3 episode of Raw.

Unfortunately for them, the result was the same, as Styles and Lee retained the gold. To many people, this may seem like an odd but similar pairing. Two men who have wrestled all around the world before coming to WWE. This pairing helps both of them while also furthering Judgment Day’s story.

Styles and Lee are Helping Each Other in Big Ways

Many people know how good Styles and Lee are. Multiple championships have been held by them in different promotions. This tag team wasn’t made with that in mind, however. The two men are at very different stages of their WWE careers. Styles confirmed that next year will be his last year wrestling, so he’ll only be around for a few more months.

A championship reign was needed to send him off on a high note. But he’s also helping Lee out as well. He had a good NXT run, but outside of a Speed Championship run, he hasn’t done that much. Winning the tag titles with Styles elevates him to another level in the company. Fans now get to see the person he’s been for years outside of the company. In Styles’s last months in WWE, he’s elevating a wrestler who deserves to have more time in the spotlight.

They Have Caused Major Problems for Judgment Day

Once again, things aren’t going smoothly for Judgment Day. In fact, fans could say that for every week dating back months. But ever since Styles and Lee wanted Balor and McDonagh’s tag team titles, tensions have been at an all-time high. It was Dominik Mysterio who opened his mouth in front of Styles weeks ago. He was responsible for Balor and McDonagh having to defend their titles. When they lost them, Balor was furious at Mysterio. They demanded a rematch, wanting to get back what they didn’t plan to lose in the first place.

On Monday’s Raw, Mysterio tried to help them in the rematch, but was unsuccessful. Surely things will break down even more next Monday. Styles and Lee have been major thorns in the side of the Judgment Day, which has and will lead to more problems within the group.

Their Pairing Could Lead to Major Developments

On the surface, the feud looks like a random tag team feuding with an established group for some titles. But if you look deeper, a lot is playing out that could be very significant years down the line. In a few months, Styles’ run as an active performer will be over. Winning the tag team titles is a final thank you for what he’s done for the business. Lee, his partner, is finally achieving main roster success with this title reign. He’s finally becoming the wrestler fans hyped him up to be when he arrived at WWE.

The Judgment Day is cracking more and more each week. Styles and Lee could be the catalyst for Balor losing it, with him or Mysterio leaving the group. This might seem like a simple storyline, but things have happened and might happen that will change the careers of everyone involved.
