AEW Dynamite Results – Mercedes Mone Returns

Welcome to our live recap of tonight’s AEW Dynamite results.

AEW Dynamite airs live once again from the Wolstein Center in Cleveland,  OH, tonight. Mercedes Mone and her collection of championship belts return, this time courting gold fresh from Poland and Italy. The Forbidden Door World Tag Team Eliminator Tournament Semifinals continue with The Young Bucks locking up with BroDido (Brody King and Bandido). Also, a 4-way qualifier for a TBS Championship match at Forbidden Door pits Queen Aminata, Skye Blue, Alex Windsor, and Billie Starkz! Plus, Mark Briscoe and MJF settle their grudge amid Hurt Syndicate rumors swirling on the internet. Unrelated, but “Speedball” Mike Bailey rides death as he faces Jon Moxley in the opener. (UPDATE: there was no real heat between MVP and Bailey as seen by this clip.)

With the 4-way and Mone’s return, I imagine these bits will intersect—as she will likely also do for CMLL and Stardom. Perhaps it’ll culminate in another 4-way at Forbidden Door, with representatives among the three big promotions. BroDido is on a roll thus far, but The Young Bucks, even without their EVP status, may prove an effective stopper to Brody King and Bandido’s thrilling team-up. Oh, wait, did I say Young Bucks? I’m sorry, I meant Talent Name.

Follow along with live results from tonight’s card with updated play-by-play and takes from the matches!

AEW Dynamite Results

MJF addressed Mark Briscoe

Jon Moxley defeated “Speedball” Mike Bailey

(This was just the match for Mike Bailey right now. Amid the “MVP heat” rumors and the boundless potential, putting Moxley in his paces puts him on a high level to test even the Ace of AEW.)

Bailey instantly went to work on Moxley. The former AEW World Champion charged his opponent across the ring and bit him in the corner. He then kept Bailey grounded with holds. Bailey fired back with kicks. Marina Shafir picked him apart outside like a vulture; Kevin Knight confronted her. Bailey swung a comeback, working Moxley’s back on the barricade, with a stomp on his spine to punctuate it.

Moxley bit Bailey’s fingers. Bailey’s flips and kicks wore down Moxley, earning him “Speedball!” chants from the Ohio crowd. A sleeper hold briefly ensnared Bailey, yet he fought off Moxley and landed a Shooting Star Press. Kuji-gatame rendered Moxley in a triangle hold. The wrestlers traded pins. Wheeler Yuta distracted Bailey with a pull of his leg, granting Moxley an opportunity for a Big Boot.

Darby Allin plucked Yuta from the ringside, dragging him back like a thief in the night. A back-heel kick from Bailey lent him a spot for another kuji-gatame. Bailey fell to his head via a Death Rider for the win.

“Timeless” Toni Storm and Alex Windsor addressed Athena and Billie Starkz

Death Riders find Wheeler Yuta

Jon Moxley and Marina Shafir chased Darby Allin to the parking lot. Finding a large trash bag tied up, they opened it. Inside was Yuta with the sign “Forbidden Door” taped to his forehead. Allin drove in their direction before speeding off as Moxley and Shafir shouted in his wake.

Mercedes Mone returned interview with Renee Paquette

Paquette complimented Mone’s recent tag team championship wins. Mone instructed her not to be a mark and moved on.

Alex Windsor defeated Queen Aminata, Skye Blue, and Billie Starkz

(As Shania Twain once said, “Let’s go, girls”. Each woman’s strengths were exemplified in this entertaining bout.)

Aminata drove Blue to the ground with strikes. Windsor threw Starkz to the outside. Aminata and Windsor united their chops to Blue, who screamed at them to stop. Aminata smashed Windsor’s face in her rear. Blue plummetted Aminata to the floor with a neckbreaker. Starkz bowled everyone over with a dive through the ropes.

Windsor broke up Windsor’s offense on Aminata. Windsor planted Starkz with a Powerbomb, transitioned into a Sharpshooter. Blue and Starkz superkicked Aminata and Windsor out of the way, and each met a German Suplex by their victims. Windsor and Aminata collapsed after simultaneously headbutting each other. Blue dropped Windsor to the mat with a Code Red from the top rope. Starkz senton’d Blue.

Athena attempted a coup on Windsor in the ring, but Toni Storm pulled her away. Starks attempted to flip Windsor, who made herself into deadweight to draw out a roll-up for the pinfall.

Post-match: Mercedes Mone greeted Windsor with less than friendly intent. As she cornered Windsor, Storm slowly approached but was met by Athena’s violence. Athena and Mone shared a quiet understanding and went their separate ways.

Young Bucks interview with Renee Paquette

Paquette struggled to keep a straight face while speaking to the Bucks before asking them about BroDido. They responded with vitriol before berating a backstage crew member.

Kyle Fletcher TNT Championship Celebration

The entire Don Callis Family accompanied Fletcher as he flaunted his TNT Championship. He bragged about putting Dustin Rhodes and Adam Cole out on injury. He and Don Callis then unveiled a new Mel Coleman painting where Fletcher was only wearing a belt, whereas Callis wore a mesh shirt and jeans. Fletcher announced that the first defense of his championship would be on the August 9 episode of AEW Collision.

Adam Copeland addressed Christian Cage and FTR

Acknowledging Cage’s promo from last week, Copeland remained unimpressed with his turn of attitude. With the understanding that he can’t lay a finger on FTR, Copeland proudly declared he’d be facing off against Stokely Hathaway on the August 13 episode of AEW Dynamite.

The Young Bucks (Nicholas & Matthew Jackson) versus BroDido (Bandido & Brody King)

(Unreal. Despite being in the kayfabe pits, the Bucks commanded applause with fantastic chemistry with BroDido.)

Nicholas and Matthew were introduced as Max and Jeremy, a reference to their time in TNA Wrestling as Generation Me’s Max and Jeremy Buck.

Bandido quickly outpaced Nicholas. King instantly plowed over him and Matthew. The gargantuan later stacked both Jacksons onto one another and chopped them. Nicholas moved like a pinball, bouncing off of Bandido and King as he toppled both men. With King lifted upon his shoulders, Matthew trudged toward a top rope perched Nicholas but collapsed under his girth.

Nicholas squashed Bandido with a senton. Matthew damaged King with a stunner on the floor. Still unsure what to name the former EVP Trigger, they stumbled in their words and collided their knees. King barrelled into the brothers, cannonballing Matthew. Bandido soared in a Rocket Launch onto the Bucks on the floor to a huge ovation.

King catapulted Bandido into Nicholas, who rolled out of the way. The Bucks felled the giant King with superkicks. A TK Driver saw a nearfall, courtesy of King’s rescue of Bandido. King caught Matthew and crunched him into the apron. Like tightrope walkers, Nicholas and Bandido warred on the barricade. Bandido tossed Nicholas from there to Matthew. With frenetic energy, Brodido combined their efforts to defeat Matthew with a pinfall via a catapult.

MJF interrupted a Hurt Syndicate segment

(This was well done and posits the question of whether or not MJF will succeed in his contract efforts against Hangman Adam Page.)

MVP applauded BroDido’s efforts when MJF barged in. He tried to persuade MVP to ditch Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin and accompany him. MVP preached about how MJF’s self-centeredness will be his downfall. Expressing his brotherly love to MJF, he professed his hope that the Casino Gauntlet contract failed MJF in his upcoming match for the AEW World Championship, or else Bobby Lashley would come after him for the belt.

FTR and Stokely Hathaway anti-Adam Copeland promo

Lexy Nair asked how FTR and Stokely Hathaway felt heading into the upcoming Dynamite match between Hathaway and Copeland. Cash Wheeler bragged about Hathaway’s in-ring prowess. Hathaway presented himself pathetically before declaring he’d send Copeland home to his wife, who was not spared his verbal toxicity.

Swerve Strickland addressed Don Callis and Kazuchika Okada

Strickland, when pressed by Renee Paquette, said he was not worried about Callis in his upcoming AEW Unified Championship against Okada. Confident he’d soon topple the Rainmaker in London at Forbidden Door.

Mark Briscoe addressed MJF

Alicia Atout asked how Briscoe felt ahead of his grudge match against MJF. She then mentioned that if he won, he’d soon be in a position to challenge for the AEW World Championship. Hangman Adam Page then met Briscoe, wishing him luck so that they might soon face each other in the ring.

Queen Aminata promo interrupted by Willow Nightingale and Kris Statlander

Aminata admitted regret in not winning the 4-way earlier in the evening. Nightingale embraced her, encouraging her to keep going. Statlander burst in, hugging Aminata, Nightingale, and Renee Paquette, who, I’m sure, was quite tired of everyone at this point in the episode. Nightingale told Statlander they can talk whenever she takes things seriously. Statlander responded aptly by throwing confetti in the air and darting off.

Mark Briscoe versus MJF

(My adrenaline was flowing during this. Briscoe captured hope for retribution so well that it was easy to believe MJF would get his comeuppance. The chase for the Froggy-Bow was compelling on its own.)

A spiteful Briscoe battered MJF seconds after the bell. MJF bit Briscoe, pushing him into the corner. Ready for a dive, Briscoe instead watched as MJF slunk off into the crowd. Distracted by a fan, MJF wasted too much time, and Briscoe caught up to him. He chased MJF back to the ringside, where he landed a neckbreaker. Pulling out a table, Briscoe had to abandon it to attempt a Froggy-Bow on MJF in the ring. Always the bully, MJF agonized Briscoe with merciless turnbuckle offense.

Briscoe swung a comeback, hurling MJF all around the ring. Leaving a Froggy-Bow, Briscoe instead pierced MJF with an elbow drop. Once more, deserting a Froggy-Bow, he soared through the ropes to MJF by the barricade. Propping his opponent on the table, Briscoe was denied yet another Froggy-Bow. MJF wrenched Briscoe in a Boston Crab, fully sunk in. An inside cradle courtesy of Briscoe disrupted this hold. At last, Briscoe landed a Froggy-Bow, but didn’t get the pinfall he sought.

One more Froggy-Bow, this time with MJF prone on the table outside. MJF moved out of the way, leaving Briscoe alone in the debris. Briscoe stumbled out of the wreckage and made it to the ring to beat the 10-Count. MJF blasted Briscoe with a Heatseeker. The referee did not see this, so the victory went to MJF. Seeing Briscoe’s leg was propped on the rope, MJF hid this from the referee.

Post-match, MJF assaulted the defeated Briscoe, even pulling out his Dynamite Diamond Ring for additional hurt. Hangman Adam Page scowled to the entrance, greeting MJF with pure fury, brawling with him. Page checked on a blood-soaked Briscoe. He then departed to the crowd to waylay punches on the fleeing MJF. Aiming for a Buckshot Lariat, Page halted as MJF had put distance between them en route to backstage.

Final Thoughts

The show was a blast tonight. Granted, a few too many promos and backstage segments, but the matches hit their marks. Not only that, but so many stories progressed. The Young Bucks and BanDido stole the show, but the women’s 4-way solidified how physical their division will be until they’re given the same respect as the men. Mike Bailey benefited greatly from his bout with Moxley. However, Briscoe and MJF provided a nasty cap to the night with a real slugfest adorned with plunder.

It’s weeks away, but I’m ready to step through the Forbidden Door.
