Hangman Page and Will Ospreay face-to-face

Ospreay offered a bottle of beer, but Page didn’t seem to care. The Aerial Assassin announced that he and Page would be the main event at Double or Nothing. Stressing the importance of this match, Ospreay professed how much he needed to win. From the ring crew to the fans who’ve followed his career, he has to bring the title “home” at Forbidden Door in London. Page retorted that it would be a huge opportunity for a talent like Ospreay, even himself. The Anxious Millennial Cowboy elaborated further that this match is personal, to rectify two years of grief and misery. Page raged on in a tearful, emotional tirade about how he needs his wife and son to look at him without pity.

Ospreay’s response was no longer kind, mentioning Page’s onslaught to Swerve Strickland at Full Gear 2024 and forcing Christopher Daniels into retirement. The pair agreed that Ospreay’s struggles against AEW Men’s World Champion Jon Moxley were unfruitful in the past, with Ospreay urging Page to bring his all, to show him, so he can know how to beat Jon Moxley. He followed it up by listing his collection of wins over the top talent in AEW and NJPW. He concluded that after the match, he and Page could be on better terms and have each other’s backs. They then tossed back their bottles of beers like they were drinking Budweisers with Steve Austin in 1999.

This was a masterclass in in-ring promo segments. Not only did it feel natural, but it also tugged on the heartstrings. Each man delivered their goals and how important this opportunity is to them. They elevated the importance of the match, with respect and emotion paramount throughout. Fight or go down shooting.

Samoa Joe, Powerhouse Hobbs, and Swerve Strickland defeated The Young Bucks (Nicholas and Matthew Jackson) and Jon Moxley

Moxley seized the still-burning anger welling within Joe, leading Hobbs to tag in. Strickland displaced the Bucks, but Moxley rescued them. Strickland rangled Moxley and the Bucks for a prime tope suicida from Joe. Moxley and the Bucks targeted Hobbs’s weak knee. Nicholas incurred his wrath, however, and suffered a drop to his spine for his troubles. Strickland, isolated, suffered the concentrated efforts of the Bucks with a double standing Moonsault nearly spelling his doom. Middle-finger raised, Moxley plummeted Strickland with a Standing Piledriver. Though Moxley and the Bucks exploited his exhaustion for most of the match, Strickland managed a hot tag with Joe. Matthew fell to Joe’s enziguiri, followed by Strickland’s Frog Splash. Joe, Strickland, and Hobbs took turns clobbering the Bucks with Strickland soaring to them on the outside. As Joe clutched one of the Jacksons with a Coquina Clutch, Strickland rolled up the other for the win.

Post-match, the Bucks and the Death Riders assaulted the winners until Katsuyori Shibata, Willow Nightingale, and Kenny Omega came out for the save. As one of the Bucks was about to be sent through a table, Claudio Castagnoli charged to the ring to drag them out. Hastily retreating, Joe warned them that he and his teammates will come after them tonight.

Hurt Syndicate and MJF backstage segment and in-ring Contract Signing

The Hurt Syndicate professed their anticipation for the upcoming contract signing. MJF and Mark Sterling entered their vicinity. MVP greeted MJF as he and the Syndicate exited the room.

MJF and MVP insulted Albuquerque while they indulged in the formalities and pleasantries of this signing. MVP and MJF signed while Shelton Benjamin took his time. Bobby Lashley took even more time, as though still mulling over his decision before at last putting pen to paper.

Sammy Guevara and Dustin Rhodes entered. Rhodes snarled about MJF’s untrustworthy tendencies. Touting himself and Guevara as “Day One Guys”, Rhodes assured the audience they can safely bet on them.

Kazuchika Okada addressed “Speedball” Mike Bailey

Okada stated that Bailey doesn’t call the shots, that he does. Renee Paquette asked him if he’s worried about Bailey’s singles record since signing with AEW. Okada answered, “There’s a first time for everything”, before hilariously and awkwardly ending the segment.

Ricochet defeated Anthony Bowens

Bowens gained an immediate advantage, handling Ricochet mercilessly. Opting to retreat, Ricochet bounced into Billy Gunn before Bowens sent him into the barricade. Before Bowens could slam Ricochet on the apron courtesy of a Fireman’s Carry, Ricochet grabbed the referee, leveraging them to escape. Bowens rebounded with an elevated slam. Dodging a Spirit Gun, Bowens countered with another drop. Ricochet snuck in a pair of scissors, poking Bowens in the face and sneaking a pinfall victory.

Post-match, Mark Briscoe steered a stretcher, walloping Ricochet. Evading a Froggy Bow, Ricochet rolled off the stretcher and staggered away.

Anthony Bowens continues to maximize his freedom from The Acclaimed. Though he didn’t win, he was protected well, and hopefully, he can sustain momentum for something substantial soon.

Stokely Hathaway and FTR backstage promo

Hathaway insulted Daniel Garcia and Nigel McGuinness in addition to Adobe Acrobat. He further invited them to sign a contract for their upcoming tag team match.

Mercedes Money and Jamie Hayter face-to-face

Renee Paquette asked how Hayter felt being the underdog. She responded that being an underdog makes her more dangerous. Mone retaliated that she’s “the Beyonce of professional wrestling”, and that she’s not looking past Hayter—she’s looking through her like a glass doll. She then illustrated why she’s meant for this Owen Hart Cup win, showcasing her titles and win record. For Hayter, the match is about putting her back on track, whereas Mone hopes to cement her legacy in AEW. Hayter pointed out Mone’s slowly spreading cracks, casting a light on the recently lost NJPW STRONG Openweight Women’s Championship. Mone battered Hayter, but she recovered and delivered a Hayterade. The segment ended with “Timeless” Toni Storm waltzing to commentary.

Mina Shirakawa versus Julia Hart

Shirakawa keenly ducked out of Hart’s every move, using their trajectory to drop her opponent with a Knee Drop. Hart nearly secured a comeback with a Moonsault, but Shirakawa survived. Shirakawa endured a rollup with one of her own to defeat Hart decisively.

Post-match, Shirakawa and Storm celebrated. A bitter Hart attacked her former opponent, aided by Skye Blue. Storm made the save. The seeming friends played a tug-of-war for Storm’s AEW Women’s World Championship. Shirakawa wrenched Storm’s legs with a figure-four on the ringpost.

Short match, but explosive and enthralling. Albuquerque knew they were being fed. If not something substantial, it was damn sure going to be tasty.

Closing segment

The Young Bucks attempted to leave the Rio Rancho Events Center as they called Samoa Joe a liar for not chasing them down like he said they would. Joe and Powerhouse Hobbs swarmed them with weapons, brawling to the ring, joined by the Death Riders, Katsuyori Shibata, Kenny Omega, Willow Nightingale, and Swerve Strickland. Omega withstood an EVP Trigger from the Young Bucks; he and Strickland struck them with a V-Trigger and House Call. Moxley continued to choke out Joe on the outside. Gabe Kidd smashed Omega and Strickland, lending them to Matthew and Nicholas Jackson to splash through them on tables erected near the entrance ramp.

Now that’s what I call a tasteful teaser. This sneak peek showcases what makes Anarchy in the Arena matches so entertaining, but the best is yet to come.

Closing thoughts

Tonight made the card for Double or Nothing feel can’t miss. From the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament face-to-face segments to the Toni Storm and Mina Shirakawa segments, the show appears exciting. However, they knew Anarchy in the Arena would be the main attraction, so they spotlighted that to its best potential. I’m hyped.
