AEW Dynamite Results

Hangman Adam Page addressed the fans and Will Ospreay

Expressing his appreciation for AEW fans, Page then declared that though he may never forgive Swerve Strickland, he’s ready to move on from their feud if he is. Page then beckoned Ospreay to the ring to acknowledge their upcoming match in the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament Match. The audience applauded this meeting before wishing Ospreay a happy birthday. (Happy birthday, William!)

Ospreay spoke of how important this match was to both of them. He then forewent the kind formalities before mentioning that Page has wrought a chaos that didn’t need to happen: Jeff Jarrett, Christopher Daniels, and Strickland. The Brit professed what he’s done and that their upcoming match at Double or Nothing is about his ascension.

The Don Callis Family emerged at the entrance, as Callis warned Ospreay about Page’s existence as a “violent sociopath”. Ospreay had had enough, challenging two of Callis’s men against him and Page. Page silently expressed his uncertainty in teaming with Ospreay. Meanwhile, Callis obliged in Ospreay’s offer.

FTR and Stokely Hathaway interrupt commentary

Hathaway verbally assaulted Tony Schiavone on the microphone. Shiavone attempted to retrieve control before FTR pushed him back in the chair. Cash Wheeler bemoaned Daniel Garcia’s lack of empathy toward them, while Dax Harwood dared Nigel McGuinness to keep stepping up to them.

Anna Jay & Harley Cameron promo segment

Jay and Cameron shared appreciation for each other for having her back. They agreed to do more team-ups together.

If you like silliness and character work, watch this. Both women play off each other well.

“Timeless” Toni Storm (c) defeated Thunder Rosa, Penelope Ford, and Anna Jay in a 4-way Eliminator Match

Jay wasted no time in brawling with Ford, taking the match to the barricade. Erstwhile, Rosa kept Storm down with fiery offense before Ford claimed the reins. She overwhelmed Rosa, nearly pinning her after a dropkick. Jay broke this up, as did Storm, to Jay’s own pinfall attempt. Ford tossed them overboard and moonsaulted to them on the outside. Rosa reintroduced them all to the ringside padding with a fast Tornado Dive. After a wild brawl on the outside, Ford took advantage, leading to Ford to land a devastating Orihara Moonsault. Megan Bayne entered the fray, dispatching Storm. Jay withstood the combination of Bayne and Ford, leaving time for Cameron to beat Bayne to the back with a pipe.

Ford engaged Jay in an Indian Deathlock, broken only by Storm kicking her in the nether region. With no one else in the ring, Storm finished Ford off with a Crossface Chickenwing. Ford rolled out of the ring as Jay mourned. Storm and Rosa, however, celebrated the former’s victory.

An electric match. With Storm, Jay, and Rosa as the bigger stars, Ford stood out with an incredible performance that really glued the match together.

Hurt Syndicate segment

Action Andretti and Lio Rush of the CRU tag team watched in the audience. The Hurt Syndicate entered the ring, as MVP requested any of AEW’s best tag teams to stand toe-to-toe with them. Top Flight attempted to challenge Shelton Benjamin and Bobby Lashley until MJF ambushed them and laid vicious strikes on all of them. Painted in their blood and sporting a mean scowl, he declared that he hurts people. The crowd also chanted that they hurt people, so perhaps everyone is eligible to enter the Hurt Syndicate. Lashley grinned, informing MJF he’ll have an official answer next week.

This is the exact direction I’ve been wanting this story to progress. MJF has a meaner streak, while The Hurt Syndicate comes off as THE team to join in AEW.

The Elite and Ricochet segment

Okada and Ricochet joined the Bucks in addressing their matches. The Bucks entered their locker room, only to be met with the Death Riders.

Nick Wayne (c) versus Rhino for the ROH World Television Championship

The legendary behemoth handled Wayne at first, but a dropkick from the champ sent him reeling. Rhino regained control, flinging him to the corners and charging at his midsection. The Patriarchy tried to distract him, but the challenger stayed on track, delivering a Spinebuster. Wayne recovered, ending Rhino with a Killswitch.

Post-match, Christian Cage acted as though he were about to adorn the ROH World Television belt across Wayne’s waist, but instead dropped it and walked away with a smirk.

RUSH backstage promo

Furious over his loss in the Collision 4-way on the previous episode of AEW Collision, RUSH declared Kevin Knight would be his next target.

The Young Bucks (Nick & Matt Jackson) & Ricochet Mark Briscoe, Swerve Strickland, & “Speedball” Mike Bailey

With no hesitation, Strickland pummelled Ricochet to a pulp. He proceeded to launch Bailey like a projectile to exhaust Ricochet. The Bucks opted to leave Ricochet to the wolves, but the opposing team attacked them while distracted. Back in the ring, Matt and Nick sent Strickland and Briscoe to the outside whilst Ricochet landed on Bailey with a 450 Splash. Briscoe went on to endure torment at the hands of Ricochet and the Bucks. Bailey equalized the playing field, nearly pinning Matt with a Standing Shooting Star Press. Nick came to Matt’s aid, yet with a single hurricanrana, Bailey sent the former into the latter. An all-out frenzy transpired with Strickland dropping Matt with a House Call.

Strickland crushed Nick with a Backbreaker, leading Briscoe to follow up with a Death Valley Driver and later a Froggy Bow. Bailey knocked down Matt on the outside with a splash. Hoping to take advantage of Nick’s isolation, Strickland instead lost to an inside cradle.

Fantastic trios match, albeit a bit meandering at points in terms of storytelling pacing. However, this advances Strickland’s ongoing feud with the Young Bucks.

MJF confronted Will Ospreay

Jamie Hayter interview with Renee Paquette

Hayter accused Mercedes Mone of being against everything that Owen Hart stood for. She doesn’t care for what Mone’s past accolades and star power bring her; she’s ready for anything Mone brings to her. Eventually, Mone sought to ambush her, but Hayter was ready. The pair battled their way to the arena with Mone barely escaping a lariat by Hayter before dropping her and clutching her with a Statement Maker.

Kris Statlander and Willow Nightingale backstage segment

Nightingale addressed her recent issues with the Death Riders. Statlander interrupted her interview with Lexy Nair to attempt to rebuild their bridge. Nightingale rebuffed her, but did open a chance for a match in the future. Statlander bitterly obliged.

Kazuchika Okada (c) defeated Kevin Knight in an Eliminator Match

Knight hadn’t even entered the ring yet when RUSH and Dralistico assaulted him. Mike Bailey ran in, kicking Dralistico and chasing off RUSH. Bailey helped Knight to the ring, to Okada’s humorous disappointment. Once the bell rang, Okada charged at Knight, leading to a late kickout early in the match. Despite Okada’s ruinous moves, Knight kept kicking out of each successive pin attempt. Okada, unrelenting, sent Knight careening to the outside with one high dropkick. Moments later, Knight made a furious comeback, punctuated by a leaping hurricanrana and standing splash.

Knight sought a UFO Splash, but Okada countered it with his knees. Knight briefly dazed Okada with an elevated dropkick but couldn’t capitalize. Okada at last won the match via a Rainmaker.

Post-match, Okada tried for more Rainmakers, but Bailey charged to Knight’s aid.

Okada being so high-level yet working at the lowest level, so he doesn’t have to try, is an outstanding bit. Still, this gave Knight another high-profile match before he heads off to Japan for NJPW’s Best of the Super Juniors tournament.

Hurt Syndicate backstage segment

MVP, Shelton Benjamin, and Bobby Lashley were walking with an unfamiliar man in the back when Lexy Nair attempted an interview. The quartet mostly kept quiet, with MVP introducing this fourth man as Harrison Landau, their legal counsel.

Samoa Joe defeated Claudio Castagnoli

Castagnoli brought Joe to the corner, but the Opps member was unfazed. Trying again, Castagnoli instead found himself in the wrapped arms of the Samoan. Joe stood, enraged, as Castagnoli delivered a series of chops. With little else to offer, the Swiss wrestler opted to work the arm of Joe to weaken his strikes. Joe nearly finished the match with a Senton after a Scoop Slam. Castagnoli fired back with renewed energy after launching from the ropes to a Corkscrew Uppercut. Joe leveraged Castagnoli’s inability to lift him for the Giant Swing to tap him out with the Coquina Clutch.

Post-match, Joe invited the encroaching Death riders before Hobbs joined him with a steel chair in hand. Jon Moxley, Marina Shafir, and Wheeler Yuta could only watch as the pair swung a chair mercilessly across the back of Castagnoli. The show ended with Joe and Hobbs standing tall and mighty.

I’ve seen these two square off in WWE back in the late 2010s, and their chemistry from then and the 2000s ROH could be felt here. Perhaps it’s only wishful perception on my end, but it seems Catagnoli is developing an angrier side of his normally stoic self in the ring. Contrasted to the mighty yet strategic Joe, these elements mesh well.

Closing thoughts

The show tonight resumed the thrilling nature of AEW’s high-octane style. Each match set up from this episode is exciting. The progression in the Hurt Syndicate and MJF storyline in particular continues to head into a concrete direction. Jamie Hayter, Kevin Knight, Mike Bailey, and Penelope Ford owned this night. Adam Page and Will Ospreay’s Double or Nothing bout may very well steal that show.
