AEW Dynamite Results

Kenny Omega (c) defeated Blake Christian for the AEW International Championship

Despite an early fire in the beginning, Christian could not keep pace with Omega. Taunting him with a middle finger, the challenger received chops to the chest courtesy of the champion. Targeting the compromised abdomen of post-diverticulitis Omega, Christian followed up with a Spear to the midsection. A couple of Snap-Dragon Suplexes by Omega gave him a quick comeback, with enough time to drop him on one of his knees. Omega then retained the championship after a V-Trigger and his trusted One-Winged Angel for the 3-count.

Post-match, Omega addressed Ricochet and “Speedball” Mike Bailey ahead of AEW Dynasty. Bailey entered, professing his respect for Omega before stating he would defeat Omega at Dynasty. Ricochet interrupted live via satellite in a luxurious pool area. Not present due to his upcoming wedding to Samantha Johnson (formerly Samantha Irvin of WWE fame), he did his signature taunt and left.

It was clear that Christian was an Omega pick, and they used his unpopularity well. Through video packages, the reaction of the fans and the story told of how far ahead Omega is, it’s hard to argue that fact. That said, this was nice and quick—a digestible opener to tonight’s proceedings.

Learning Tree backstage segment

Chris Jericho berated Bryan Keith and Big Bill for their failures to take out his enemies once and for all, barking at them to leave. Jericho then shifted his attention to Bandido, demanding he put his mask on the line in order to challenge for the ROH championship.

MJF addressed MVP and the Hurt Syndicate

MJF insulted the Minnesotan audience before beckoning MVP to the ring. The cane-wielding mouth of the Hurt Syndicate obliged. MJF mulled over his thoughts before announcing he, too, likes to hurt people. Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin came to the ring. Lashley requested that MJF hand him the business card for the Hurt Syndicate, and ripped it in two before him. MVP kept the situation from escalating so MJF could exit. Big Bill and Bryan Keith then sauntered to the entrance, engaging in a verbal war with MVP. Bill recalled that he never lost the AEW Tag Team Championship that he and the former Ricky Starks once held. MVP accepted the challenge for Bill and Keith to challenge Lashley and Benjamin.

Kyle Fletcher defeated Brody King

Fletcher arrogantly celebrated knocking King down after the first bell, but suffered. King broke down his opponent with weight and strength. Fletcher tried to match King’s strikes, but fell to them. Resorting to dirty tactics, he stomped on his larger opponent’s head. King responded in kind with a loud, thunderous Lariat. King proceeded to endure Fletcher’s shots, eventually planting him to the mat and tackling him through to the outside via a tope suicida. Fletcher bullied King further until the latter flipped him onto the ring apron (to which an audience member hilariously declared Fletcher dead). Aiming to drop Fletcher again, he barely survived a Tombstone Piledriver. King missed a cannonball into the turnbuckle, which stunned him enough for Fletcher to gain the advantage. Perched atop the top turnbuckle, King landed headfirst on it in a Brainbuster by Fletcher.

Post-match, Fletcher and Mark Davis attacked him like vultures. Powerhouse Hobbs sprinted to the ring, lowering the straps on his singlet. The irate Hobbs and King decimated the fleeing Aussie Open.

Sick and gnarly without the extra violence. Put simply, this was an adrenaline shot that made Fletcher all the more despicable throughout the bout.

Powerhouse Hobbs defeated Mark Davis

Starting at the end of the pull-apart brawl resulting from the previous match, Davis roughed up Hobbs in the turnbuckle. Thanks to a few slams, Hobbs mounted a successful comeback to resounding “MEAT!” chants by the crowd. Hobbs finally dispatched Davis with a Spinebuster for a quick, yet hard-fought win.

A nice collision of meat. However, I was a bit distracted by Jason Momoa and Jack Black in a Minecraft-themed set promoting AEW, as well as the former NXT star Von Wagner in security.

Nick Wayne interview with Renee Paquette

Accompanied by his mother Martha Wayne and “adopted brother” Kip Sabian, Wayne stood his ground on his souring feelings toward Christian Cage, threatening to show how to “properly execute a plan.”

Hangman Page and Swerve Strickland segment

Rated-FTR interview with Tony Schiavone

Dax Harwood apologized to Cope for the harsh actions on last week’s Dynamite. Cash Wheeler, however, professed he wanted to get more mileage out of their alliance, to which Cope agreed. Harwood, albeit reluctant, silently agreed too. The trio then challenged the Death Riders for their AEW World Trios Championship.

Swerve Strickland called out Jon Moxley

Strickland, understandably still angry from the assault by Moxley on AEW Collision’s Slam Dunk weekend, snarled that the AEW World Champion should make his way to the ring. Accusing Moxley of hiding behind his Death Riders. Suggesting that Moxley couldn’t bear not seeing the belt over his shoulder anymore, Strickland asked how Moxley’s back was doing. In poetic irony, Strickland mused that he’s become what Moxley used to advertise himself as. Unresponsive, Moxley watched Claudio Castagnoli walk behind Prince Nana’s back as Strickland could only watch. Nana seemed to know something was off, but didn’t dare look behind him.

Moxley then spoke, saying Strickland could be so much more. He stated that Strickland’s dedication gives him hope for the future of wrestling. Marina Shafir attempted a run-in, but Willow Nightingale met her. Strickland mentioned he was far ahead of what Moxley has become. The women attempted a brawl, but an unflinching Castagnoli carried Shafir away.

Very well done. Though Cope presented something close to a problem later in his feud with Moxley, Strickland is THE threat.

The Opps save AR Fox and Top Flight from a recruiting Max Caster

Jay White interview with Renee Paquette

White announced he would be at the upcoming AEW Collision to face whoever steps in the ring with him, and mentioned his strong intention to win the Owen Hart Cup.

With how much AEW has been emphasizing White’s promos about the Owen Hart Cup, he’s either going to win or have a huge angle coming out of it.

Top Flight (Dante Martin & Darius Martin) defeated Alex Findley and Devo Knight

As an announcement for Top Flight versus Bryan Keith & Big Bill flashed, both teams traded fast-paced action. Dante ended the match with a Splash onto the legal opponent to finish the match.

Succinct, this match filled its runtime with spots that maximized and validated its place on the card. Harmless fun, but skippable if you’re looking for substance.

Konosuke Takeshita defeated Mark Briscoe

Like Water, Briscoe flowed in and out of Takeshita’s offense, with Redneck Kung-Fu of his own. This fluid momentum met its dam in the form of Takeshita’s Superplex from the top rope. An energetic Briscoe fell to a big boot and a DDT onto the ring apron that recoiled him to the outside. Grappling on the top rope, Briscoe bit Takeshita’s forehead before battering him against the ropes. Briscoe maintained control with his unpredictable style, cannonballing himself through tope suicidas on Takeshita, punctuated with an elbow drop from the barricade. Withstanding a massive German Suplex, Briscoe blasted Takeshita with a strong lariat.

A dominant knee strike stunned Briscoe, but he countered with a Double-Underhook Jay Driller. Takeshita survived it, later downing him with a rolling elbow. A Blue Thunderbomb then finished the match. Don Callis entered the ring to celebrate with him.

What a thriller. One of Briscoe’s finest moments in AEW. The chemistry with Takeshita was off the charts.

Death Riders address Rated-FTR and accept their challenge

Hurt Syndicate backstage promo

MVP explained trying to induct MJF into the Hurt Syndicate. Detailing the promise in how reprehensible MJF is, MVP promised he’d drop it to preserve Lashley and Benjamin’s dynamic if needed. They agreed to mull it over later and focus on facing Bryan Keith and Big Bill later on.

Megan Bayne & Penelope Ford defeated Toni Storm & Thunder Rosa

Bayne and Rosa blasted off in the opening, but the Megasus opted out of facing the legal Storm. Ford fired off with quick offense. Combining their efforts, Rosa and Storm decimated Ford in the corner, cutting her off from Bayne. Ford dodged a lariat from Storm but fell to Rosa’s elbow. Bayne dropped Rosa with a Fate’s Descent. Rosa chopped at Bayne, escaping a Fate’s Descent and bumped Megasus with a Hip Attack. Much to Storm’s horror, Bayne grounded her with a dropkick and a successful Fate’s Descent for the pinfall.

Surely to be a controversial ending, this did a good job of solidifying the threat that Bayne poses ahead of AEW Dynasty. Storm’s understandably very confident after her return and later title win, but Bayne is no mere competitor of Storm’s normal fare; she’s a looming monster that requires more than determination and the old reliable tools. She needs to pull out something to overcome Bayne’s overwhelming power. This match rocked, and the story beats justified the finish.

Closing thoughts

A strong episode without too many shockers. Just another AEW affair in this new year. The Dynasty matches look all the more tantalizing. Most of the title matches look exciting, even Jericho versus Bandido for the ROH title. Fans looking for more Swerve Strickland and Hangman Page interactions will love their brief confrontation.
