BREAKING: Dr. Wagner Jr. Beats Johnny Mundo for AAA Mega Champion

After creating the biggest headline in Mexico last year by removing his iconic mask he’d worn for over 30 years previously, Dr. Wagner Jr. (now called Rey Wagner) tonight defeated Johnny Mundo (aka John Morrison, Johnny Impact and Boone the Bounty Hunter) for the AAA Mega Championship at Guerra de Titanes, the company’s top title, effectively removing the last piece of AAA gold off of Mundo.

For over a year, Mundo was the top star of AAA, holding the companies top three singles belts – the AAA World Cruiserweight Championship, the AAA Latin American Championship, and the AAA Mega Championship. But following a messy break-up between Mundo’s real life fiance, former AAA Reina de Reinas Champion Taya Valkyrie, and AAA after she was stripped of her title, Mundo has been openly vocal of AAA, particularly AAA’s Head of Talent, Vampiro. Since then, Mundo dropped both his AAA World Cruiserweight Championship (to Lanzelot) and his AAA Latin American Championship (to El Hijo del Fantasma, aka Lucha Underground‘s King Cuerno) on the same night, at October’s Heroes Inmortales XII.

A few weeks back, Johnny Mundo appeared on Hannibal TV and continued to spout disdain for Vampiro, referring to him as a “stooge”. He was also upset that AAA booked him and announced him for tonight’s Guerra de Titanes without asking or informing him.

For tonight’s match for the Mega Championship, Vampiro inserted himself as the Special Guest Referee, which raised some concern that he wanted himself in the match in case anyone decided to go into business for themself. And though Wagner’s son, Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr, turned heel on his dad and joined Mundo, Rey Wagner was able to still win his 3rd AAA Mega Championship, and first since 2010.

Immediately after the title change was announced, Taya Valkyrie responded to AAA’s official Twitter with this short reply.
