#AndNEW: Christopher Daniels Wins Interim DEFY World Championship

Christopher Daniels DEFY World Champion

On Saturday, December 18, at DEFY Wrestling‘s Dark Horse event in Seattle, Washington, AEW star Christopher Daniels, amidst a comeback in pro wrestling after seemingly stepping away in May of this year, defeated Brody King to become the interim DEFY World Champion. Reigning DEFY World Champion, “Ravenous” Randy Myers, was 660+ days into his DEFY World title reign, but due to recent changes in traveling protocols in Myers’ native Canada, he was unable to make it to Dark Horse, which lead to the crowning of an interim World Champion until Myers is able to return to defend his title.

Christopher Daniels Wins Interim Title by Defeating Brody King

Ravenous Randy defeated SCHAFF for the DEFY World Championship in February of 2020 at DEFY Kings of Crash, but has so far been unable to return to the U.S. to defend the title due to international travel protocols between Canada and the U.S. Randy, from Calgary, Alberta, Canada and trained by the Hart family, returned to action in British Columbia this past October for the new Vancouver promotion, Nation Extreme Wrestling (NEW), but has yet to return to the U.S. Pacific Northwest indie scene where he’s been a regular (and now World Champion) with DEFY Wrestling since 2017, as well as working for California’s Hoodslam.

It initially appeared that Christopher Daniels was leaving the in-ring part of his nearly 30-year career in pro wrestling behind following his loss in May of this year in AEW. After losing an AEW World Tag Team title match against champions The Young Bucks, Daniels dissolved SCU with longtime partner Frankie Kazarian and seemingly left AEW behind (at least in-ring, as he works backstage in the office as Head of Talent Relations). In September, he made his surprise return, although not in AEW – it was with IMPACT Wrestling, where he’d spent a considerable run of his career as a 4x IMPACT X-Division Champion and 2x IMPACT World Tag Team Champion. He made his DEFY return a week later and has since picked up wins over Titus Alexander and Daniel Garcia leading into Saturday’s match against Brody King. Daniels has also competed for Minnesota’s F1RST Wrestling and recently made his NJPW STRONG debut at NJPW STRONG Nemesis, where he lost to Jay White, and has recently left the door open for a return to the ring in AEW. It marks the first major singles title for Daniels since he was Ring of Honor World Champion in 2017.
