#AndNEW: Masashi Takeda Wins GCW Ultraviolent Championship

Masashi Takeda wins GCW UV Title

On Monday at an event in Japan for Big Japan Wrestling (BJW), Japanese deathmatch veteran “Crazy Kid” Masashi Takeda defeated Drew Parker to become the new Game Changer Wrestling (GCW) Ultraviolent Champion, ending Parker’s reign at 93-days. Takeda is scheduled to compete for GCW for a series of shows in November, in events in Chicago and Detroit. Drew Parker had previously won the newest GCW title from inaugural champion Alex Colon at GCW Homecoming this past July, and defended it twice at other BJW events in Japan.

Takeda is no stranger to GCW – he made his GCW in 2017 in the Tournament of Survival, and returned in 2018 to win that year’s Nick Gage Invitational Tournament. He has made appearances for GCW in the U.S. every year since. Takeda is a frequent combatant with BJW and FREEDOMS in Japan, where he’s a former King of FREEDOMS  (World) Champion and BJW Deathmatch Champion.

The GCW Ultraviolent Championship was created this past Spring, when Alex Colon was crowned the inaugural champion at GCW Planet Death during WrestleMania Weekend, and went on to hold the title for 105-days. The new title was a spiritual successor to the GCW Extreme Championship, which began in 2013 while the brand was still known as Jersey Championship Wrestling (JCW). Its last titleholder was PCO, who defeated Tony Deppen for the belt in September of 2018. When PCO signed with Ring of Honor in December of that year, the title was quietly retired. It will be interesting to see how the titles both play out, as PCO recently revealed he would not be re-signing with ROH and has committed himself to GCW for the foreseeable future. Whether PCO returns to reactivate the GCW Extreme title, or GCW looks to unify the Extreme and Ultraviolent titles, is yet to be revealed.
