WWE “Escape The Undertaker” Interactive Film Review

Escape the Undertaker

WWE and Netflix have partnered for a few different projects in the past, and their latest one has now made its way to the surface of the media world.

“Escape The Undertaker” was announced on Sept 7th by Bloody Disgusting. Upon the announcement, the WWE-branded film was by the website described as a “cinematic experience”: “The Undertaker has set a trap for the decorated tag team The New Day (Kofi Kingston, Big E & Xavier Woods) at his mansion. What they don’t know: The Undertaker’s mansion is an extreme Haunted House, packed to the brim with supernatural challenges. It’s up to viewers to decide the fate of these three poor souls trying to survive the wrath of The Undertaker.”

The superstar-studded film made its debut on Netflix yesterday, and…

It’s a genuinely fun, cheesy, and over-the-top experience.

Escape The Undertaker

We won’t get too much into the plot, but The New Day show up at The Undertaker‘s mansion (which is surprisingly very un-Texas looking) and are looking to take his urn from him. The movie is interactive, meaning you get to navigate your own path as Kofi Kingston, Big E and Xavier Woods attempt to find Undertaker’s urn. The 30 minute film is a mix of brash comedy, cheesy CGI graphics and weird twists and turns comparable to the likes of Black Mirror: Bandersnatch or Minecraft: Story Mode – interactive films that are also made by the streaming titan.

Despite being released around Halloween, WWE “Escape The Undertaker” doesn’t really provide too many “scary” moments. It wasn’t ever branded as some horror phenom, but it’s important to note that the spookiness is very light and easy.

My favorite moment of the film, hands down, is a fifteen second clip of Undertaker eating a tomato sandwich. I’m not going to provide any context there, just keep that thought in your head.

This project is something that will catch the eye of nearly any wrestling fan when they’re casually scrolling through their streaming platforms, but you don’t have to be a wrestling fan to understand what’s going on here. Aside from a few theme songs here and there (and boy do we mean a few), everything else could be considered casual-friendly.

You’ll have to make about 12 different choices throughout the movie, and if you get one wrong, it does give you a chance for an easy redemption.

The New Day are completely the stars of the show here. They’re funny when they need to be funny, serious when they need to be serious and just overall great performers – just like they are in the ring. We’d genuinely be interested in watching an actual movie with any of those three guys.

The Undertaker is, well, The Undertaker. Not much different about him, aside from scenes where he didn’t put on makeup so he looks like a different age in a different parts of the film.

The overall verdict here is that if you’re into the cheesy, fun, laid back side of wrestling, you’ll thoroughly enjoy this film. Having watched a few different interactive Netflix films, this one is definitely one of the most entertaining ones.
