The concerning exodus at NJPW seems set to continue. But, positively, a confirmed excursion for two promising talents should reassure the Japanese brand’s fanbase. NJPW confirmed that Young Lions Katsuya Murashima and Shoma Kato will be heading out on an excursion to complete the next phase in their careers.
NJPW’s famed excursions normally signal a strong standing with the company brass. The excursion often marks the final stage of the promotion’s dojo system. After the conclusion of the excursion, the wrestler typically returns to New Japan Pro-Wrestling under a new gimmick or identity and with an increased standing on the roster.
One example of this in action was the graduation of Hiromu Takahashi, who confirmed his NJPW exit earlier this week. Takahashi completed an impressive excursion in CMLL from 2014 to 2016 before returning to NJPW. Upon return, he joined the LIJ stable under the tutelage of Tetsuya Naito, beginning his rise to top-tier status.

Where are the Young Lions Heading?
Katsuya Murashima and Shoma Kato stand out as two top talents in the current class of Young Lions. The pair were the finalists in this year’s Young Lions Cup, contesting the final on February 1st. Murashima emerged victorious over Kato, revealing his desire to train overseas after the match’s conclusion.
The location of Murashima’s excursion has yet to be revealed. However, his send-off match has been officially confirmed. Murashima will team up with tournament runner-up Kato against the veteran pairing of Togi Makabe and Toru Yano before departing NJPW. The match will take place at New Beginning in Osaka on February 11th.
While Murashima’s plans remain under wraps, Kato’s path is much clearer. Like Takahashi before him, Kato will head to CMLL in Mexico to participate in the upcoming Fantastica Mania Tour. The longstanding tour consists of several shows co-produced by NJPW and CMLL. Kato will also compete in three send-off matches before he departs Japan. These bouts are scheduled for February 24th in Osaka, and two events at Korakuen Hall on February 26th and 27th.
Having debuted in November 2023, Murashima and Kato have notably arrived at the excursion stage far quicker than most dojo graduates. The pair is clearly very highly valued at NJPW, and their rise comes at a fortuitous time with several key personnel exiting the company. The excursion will hopefully continue their development at the same pace and make for an exciting return in a couple of years.
Congratulations to Katsuya Murashima and Shoma Kato!
