August 23, 2023, will go down as a rough day for the wrestling community. Members of the industry as well as wrestling fans were saddened by the news that Hall of Famer Terry Funk had passed away today.

In Memorium: Terry Funk Passes Away

Funk’s career spanned over 50 years and in that time he made a name for himself in almost every company he entered.  He really took off as a singles performer in 1975 when he won the NWA World Heavyweight Championship against Jack Briscoe and held it for over a year.

He wasn’t only a household name in America, but overseas as well while working in Japan. Many will look back fondly at the impact he made on the hardcore style of pro wrestling as well. It is difficult to find a spot in the wrestling world that Funk did not have his hands in.

Fans are not the only ones devastated by the news. Some of the first reports of Funk’s passing came from long-time friends and sometimes rivals Ric Flair and Mick Foley.

No matter what generation of wrestling you grew up watching, you have more than likely, at one point or another, watched in awe and been entertained by this man. Whether he was performing on the big stage or the bingo hall, he knew how to draw the fans in. He was a good man and an amazing entertainer and he will be missed by anyone who calls themselves a wrestling fan and has earned his 10 bell salute.

We at Last Word on Pro Wrestling extend our condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Terry Funk.
