WWC To Revive Classic Championship

WWC 50th Anniversary

New matches have been announced for the World Wrestling Council’s (WWC) upcoming 50th Anniversary show in Puerto Rico. The show is scheduled to be broadcast live through Fite TV on June 24th from the Rubén Rodriguez Coliseum in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. The card for the event has been fleshed out in the past few weeks and as things currently stand, WWC seems to have one last show planned before the 50th Anniversary event arrives for June 17th from the Sports Palace in Mayaguez.

One of the major matches added to the card is the finals of a tournament to crown a new Caribbean Champion. Former top heel and current top babyface Gilbert is set for the finals to take on Nihan. The giant who is heavy for current top heel Xavant’s ‘El Nuevo Orden’ (The New Order) stable. The two have faced off many times over the course of the year, including a recent Dog Collar Match at the ‘La Gran Firma’ (The Big Signing) event a few weeks ago.

WWC Caribbean Championship to be Re-Introduced

The Caribbean Championship dates back all the way to 1968 and actually predates its home promotion, World Wrestling Council. Back then called Capitol Sports Promotion (CSP). The Championship was originally promoted under L&G Promotions. A company that predated WWC and traveled through the Caribbean and was based in Florida. Under the National Wrestling Alliance banner, the title then migrated to World Promotions first and then WWC. Though it has also been taken to other companies. Particularly during the 90s, when it was defended in Americas Wrestling Federation (AWF). A rival promotion to WWC. As well as a Japanese ally promotion, Wrestling International New Generations (W*ING).

The first ever Caribbean Champion was Jose Lothario. The man who would go on to train Shawn Michaels. He would hold this title three times and his third run would see the title’s first migration to World Promotions.  While Hugo Savinovich would be the one most associated with the title prior to it’s arrival in WWC, with a total of 4 title reigns. Between all it’s homes, names such as Jack Brisco, Gama Singh, Pierre Martel, Harley Race, Scott Hall and Jake Roberts would hold it.

After going inactive in 2002, it was brought back in 2010 where, of all people, Hideo Saito won it. Better known to international fans as Captain New Japan. The title would be defended in WWC until 2012, when its primary holder, El Sensacional Carlitos, now known as Star Roger in the present day, left WWC. The company opting not to continue with the title since then, until now.

The decision to revive this Championship is a peculiar one. While it does celebrate to company’s incredible 50 year history and even before it, their male roster already boasts the use of 4 other singles Championships. The Universal Championship, held currently by Intelecto 5 Estrellas. The Puertorican Championship, its most well remembered midcard title, currently held by Mike Nice. The Television Championship, held by newcomer JC Jexx. And finally, their Jr. Heavyweight Championship, held by Brandon The Skater. They also have the Tag Team Championships, currently held by La Maldita Revolución (The Damn Revolution). Their full male roster barely goes past 20 wrestlers. So adding yet another prize for them to contend for is quite odd.
