Wrestle Kingdom 17 Will be a One-Night Event

Wrestle Kingdom 17

New Japan Pro Wrestling announced a shift for their biggest event of the year. Their official global Twitter account put out a tweet today, announcing their biggest show of the year “Wrestle Kingdom 17”, will return as a one-night event.

Wrestle Kingdom 17 Will Return to a One-Night Event

Wrestle Kingdom 17 will take place on January 4th, 2023 from the Tokyo Dome. The show was originally a one-night event from the first edition in 2007 until Wrestle Kingdom 14 in 2020. As was the original tradition, “New Year Dash” will immediately follow Wrestle Kingdom on January 5th, a show that typically sees NJPW hit the proverbial reset button on all of its storylines. New Year Dash usually kicks off the year with big angles, fresh debuts, and interesting match ups.

Wrestle Kingdom is traditionally the biggest event on the calendar for New Japan Pro Wrestling. Wrestle Kingdom 16 took place earlier this year and was spread out over three nights. The first two nights were held on January 4th and 5th with the third night taking place on the 8th. The third night was a crossover show with Pro Wrestling NOAH.

2022’s edition of Wrestle Kingdom saw Kazuchika Okada defeat Shingo Takagi in the main event of night one. Okada went out to defeat Will Ospreay on night two to retain the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship that he claimed from Takagi the night before.
