Indie Watch: The Carver of Cutters Alley

The Carver

Indie Watch is our regular series that looks at all of the amazing talents working the independent circuits around the world. Some are veterans revitalizing their careers, some are indie prospects hitting their peaks, while others are names to be on the watch for! In this edition, we look at one of the U.S. indies most disturbing characters, Iowa’s Carver of Cutters Alley.

A near 10-year veteran of the Midwest indie scene as Mallaki Matthews, in early 2020 his mind snapped and he became a demented personality bent on cruel intentions – now known simply as The Carver. And now, the 2021 CZW Prince of Deathmatches has begun to unleash unimaginable horror in an indie scene that is booming.

The man who began his pro wrestling career as Mallaki Matthews began his unhinged journey in pro wrestling in 2012. Trained by veterans Matt Cage and Brian Ash, the Davenport, Iowa native made his start in Iowa’s Scott County Wrestling (SCW, now SCW Pro) in 2012. By 2013, he had begun to work in the strong Illinois/Chicago area scene, competing in the likes of AAW, DREAMWAVE, Funky Monkey, and others, as well as Beyond Wrestling. He also began to make his name in IWA Mid-South, St. Louis Anarchy, Freelance Wrestling, and Carolina Wrestling Federation (CWF) Mid-Atlantic.

By 2019, he had expanded further on the East Coast, adding Rockstar Pro, America’s Most Loved (AML) Wrestling, and Premiere Wrestling Xperience (PWX), competing throughout the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions. But no matter his acumen and accolades, something was missing. Mallaki Matthews was progressing, but after seven years, he was still eluding the recognition he felt he deserved.

In 2020, Matthews underwent a dramatic psychological shift, when he began to don skin masks akin to Texas Chainsaw Massacre antagonist Leatherface, while his style took on the air and tone of cruelty and unrelenting violence and horror. Mallaki Matthews was always on the edge of madness…but now re-branded as the horrific Carver of Cutters Alley, he was downright ruthless.

So far in 2021, The Carver has only enhanced his reign of terror, becoming a regular threat with Indiana’s Pro Wrestling Trainwreck, while also taking his unique set of skills to the likes of ICW No Holds Barred, Timebomb Pro, F1RST Wrestling, and IWA Mid-South. At the latter, he won the 2021 Prince of the Deathmatches Tournament, taking out Remington Rohr, Phoenix Kidd, and finally Jack Griffin to win the crown.

He’s also faced such names as Rickey Shane Page, Effy, Mickie Knuckles, Cassanova Valentine, Satu Jinn, and even former WWE Superstar Gangrel in his quest to inflict – and quite probably receive – as much pain and violence as possible. Unlike most pro wrestlers, it doesn’t seem to matter whether The Carver wins or loses his matches – as long as a scar was left (either physical or psychological), then his work was done.

As The Carver continues to face national talents throughout his recent path of demented mayhem, expect his star to continue to rise, until the country’s top stars in the U.S. indies have no choice but to face the devil in the skin mask, or suffer his vengeance regardless.
