Back With a Vengeance: Carmella Challenges Sasha Banks

Carmella Sasha Banks WWE SmackDown

Since returning to WWE Friday Night SmackDown, Carmella has wasted no time staking her claim on the SmackDown Women’s Championship. Back in October, though current champ Sasha Banks retained her title after a match against former friend and former SmackDown women’s champion Bayley, she was met with a surprise attack by Carmella. A war of words ensued between the two women ever since. Though they were set to meet at WWE TLC: Tables, Ladders, and Chairs on December 21, Carmella agitated for their championship fight to occur on December 11th’s SmackDown.

Carmella clearly thinks very little of Sasha Banks’s championship reign so far. Confidently, she looked forward to toasting a victory against Banks with champagne-courtesy of her ‘sommelier’, NXT’s Akeem Young.

Carmella entered the ring after a steamy, glamorous new opening, with Young ringside waiting with bottles of bubbly. Unphased, The Boss entered the ring with her usual fanfare. Both challenger and champion were confident of their powers. Banks came in aggressively, backing Carmella against the ropes. Carmella quickly clapped back, punishingly pulling Banks’s signature blue mane. Carmella slapped the champion hard, kicking her and locking her in a drop toehold. Banks went in for one of her signature maneuvers, the backstabber, but was driven against the post and hit with a barrage of blind elbows from Carmella.

Carmella was able to toss Banks up and over the ropes, onto the apron, but Banks worked this to her advantage and delivered a meteora on Carmella. The “Untouchable” female Superstar targeted Banks’s arm, trying to weaken her ability to pull off her finishing Banks Statement later in the match. Carmella tossed the champion between the ropes and the barricade, then back into the ring. Though Carmella got two covers, Banks kicked out both times.

After repaying Carmella with her own series of blind elbows, Banks unleashed two knee strikes. Once again, Banks attempted the backstabber. Carmella acrobatically used the ropes to her advantage to trap Banks, then climbed the ropes to fly into a crossbody over Banks. The champion turned it around into a jackknife cover of Carmella, who initiated her own submission finisher, the Code of Silence. However, Banks was able to once again turn the tables on Carmell, locking her in the Banks statement.

Seeing that things were not going Carmella’s way, Young intervened, pulling Sasha Banks off the challenger. Banks, robbed of the chance to put Carmella away, vented her rage by raining a vicious assault on Carmella. She spared no fury on Young, hitting him with the backstabber and executing the Banks Statement in rapid succession. Carmella pulled Banks off her sommelier, kicked her, and threw her out of the ring. Aggression took hold of Carmella. She dunked the SmackDown Women’s Champion’s face in an ice bucket, broke a bottle across her back, and sprayed champagne over Banks, Corey Graves, and Michael Cole at the announce desk.

Though Sasha Banks retained her SmackDown women’s championship, Carmella won, and celebrated with champagne, as she had planned. As to her future plans, it is clear that this will not be her last grab for Banks’s title. This encounter left The Boss lying on the floor out cold. Carmella’s next shot at the belt may promise to be even more brutal.
