CMLL Grand Prix Tournament Returns, Team Mexico Announced

On Wednesday’s CMLL Informa, hosted by CMLL announcer, Julio Cesar Rivera, a special announcement was made regarding the 2019 CMLL Grand Prix Tournament, with a video of last year’s Grand Prix tournament match. The match involves CMLL’s partner promotions, Ring Of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling.

The big event will take place on Friday, August 30th at Arena Mexico. Julio also announced that three new debuts to the tournament would be appearing in this year’s tournament match. These three debuts are from the opposing team from either New Japan/ROH or another promotion. As of right now, the Mexican squad for the CMLL Grand Prix is Negro Casas, Dragon Lee, Barbaro Cavernario, Forastero, Diamante Azul, Soberano Jr., Volador Jr., and RUSH. CMLL will be announcing “team worlds” participants on next weeks CMLL Informa.

The format of the tournament is essentially a Multi-man Torneo Cibernetico match with one side representing Mexico while the other side is composed of international talents. Last years tournament had 18 participants with nine CMLL Mexican stars and nine International talents. The match breaks down to one on one matches from a representative of each team battling it out to a one fall match between each pairing.

The match boils down to the last two men from each team. The winner of that last match wins for their team. Last year, Michael Elgin, who represented NJPW and Canada, defeated the CMLL Heavy Weight Champion, Ultimo Guerrero, for the 2018 CMLL Grand Prix. This would mark the first time a non-Mexican team member won the tournament since 2016 when the Grand Prix Tournament match was revived.
