Former WWE Superstar Ashley Massaro Dead at 39, Peers React

Ashley Massaro

Details are still incoming, but the wrestling world was shocked to discover on Thursday evening that former WWE Superstar Ashley Massaro had passed away at the age of 39 years old. While the cause of death had yet to be released, TMZ reported that Massaro “was transported from her home in Suffolk County, NY to a nearby hospital where she died early Thursday morning. Officials would not reveal the cause of death at this point, but we’re told it’s being classified as “non-criminal.”

Ashley Massaro won the 2005 Raw Diva Search and went from swimsuit model to WWE Superstar almost overnight. A week after winning the contest, she debuted on the main roster when she was attacked by Candice Michelle and Torrie Wilson. And thus began a tumultuous four-year career in the WWE that had its share of high points and low points (including allegations of sexual abuse during her days with the company). She left the company in 2008 and soon after left the world of professional wrestling.

Though she would still periodically attend wrestling conventions around the US, earlier this year she declared she was making a return to the ring when she showed she was training with New York Wrestling Connection (NYWC).

Sadly, her final tweet was her showing the excitement from answering hundreds of fan letters as she prepared for her return on Wednesday evening.

What seemed like the beginning of a remarkable redemption story has ended with tragedy. Our condolences to the entire Massaro family and all of Ashley’s fans, friends and peers. The wrestling community came out in droves to pay their respects to their fallen sister throughout Thursday night.
