Preview: AAW Art of War (2/23/19)

On Saturday, the premier indie promotion in the booming Illinois indie scene, All American Wrestling (AAW), returns with Art of War, which features some huge match-ups and title defenses! The AAW Women’s Championship, Heritage Championship, and Tag Team Championships will all be on the line, and the AAW Heavyweight Champion Sami Callihan will be in the house! It’s a SOLD OUT show, so you’re going to have to wait until it’s available on-demand on Highspots Wrestling Network.

Jimmy Jacobs vs. Mance Warner

“The Zombie Princess” Jimmy Jacobs doesn’t wrestle as frequently as he did prior to joining the WWE in Creative, but since his return to the indies following his departure in 2017, he’s still keeping busy – apart from working the indies, he works as a producer for IMPACT Wrestling. One of the 2000s most enigmatic stars faces one of 2019’s wrestlers to watch in reigning Combat Zone Wrestling (CZW) World Heavyweight Champion Mance Warner, who is also set to debut for Major League Wrestling (MLW). Neither of these men is afraid to get a little crimson in their battles and both are a few screws loose, so expect an intriguing match-up of who can out-crazy the other.

The Rascalz (Zachary Wentz, Dezmond Xavier & Trey Miguel) vs. Rich Swann, Paco & Ace Romero

An intriguing 6-man tag team match, with two very opposite teams. The Rascalz have been lighting it up in IMPACT for the past year, with three of the very best high flyers in the game. They’ll be facing an ad-hoc unit lead by IMPACT X-Division Champion Rich Swann, who will be backed up by one of the Midwest’s emerging stars in Paco and MLW’s resident big man, Ace Romero.

Sammy Guevara vs. Darby Allin

Two of the indie’s fastest rising stars will face off for only the fourth time in singles competition, as recent All Elite Wrestling (AEW) signee Sammy Guevara goes one on one against EVOLVE Wrestling star Darby Allin. They first squared off in 2017 with Black Label Pro, with Allin scoring the win, followed up in MLW last year when Allin once again took the W. They met again last September, in AAW in the second round of the Jim Lynam Memorial Tournament, but this time Guevara got the victory. Guevara will be looking to even their series, while Allin continues his quest for respect in the business.

AAW Heritage Championship: DJ Z (c) vs. Jody Fleisch

Last December, former IMPACT star DJ Z defeated Trevor Lee to become the AAW Heritage Champion for the second time in his career and has since defended against Bandido and Myron Reed. On Saturday, he faces a much more experienced grappler in UK legend Jody Fleisch. Fleisch is a 23-year veteran from London, England, who has wrestled for the likes of PROGRESS, Revolution Pro (RevPro), IPW:UK, Insane Championship Wrestling (ICW), and Over The Top (OTT) since his debut in 1996 and he’s recently begun working the US with more frequency. He was a competitor in last year’s Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG) Battle of Los Angeles.

AAW Women’s Championship: Kylie Rae (c) vs. Su Yung

Chicago’s Kylie Rae has had a rocket strapped to her back the past year, emerging as one of the top women’s indies wrestling stars and most recently made headlines signing to the AEW Women’s division. She won the Freelance Wrestling Championship last month and in early January beat Tessa Blanchard for her second reign as the Zelo Pro Women’s Champion, and is in her first reign as AAW Women’s Champion. She defeated Kimber Lee back in November of last year. She faces a former IMPACT Knockouts Champion and one of the most demented and dangerous women in the sport in “The Undead Bride” Su Yung. But Kylie Rae holds two victories in two singles contests against Su, beating her at the Making Towns Classic Semi-Final last year and knocking Yung out of the AAW Women’s Championship tournament back in 2017. Su Yung will be looking to stop the losing streak against one of Chicago’s finest and in the process, take her gold away from her.

AAW Tag Team Championship: The Lucha Brothers (Pentagon Jr. & Fenix) (c) vs. FireFox (AR Fox & Myron Reed) vs. LAX (Ortiz & Santana)

Photo: AAW

A huge triple threat for the AAW Tag Team Championship, featuring three of the best tag teams in the world today. Newly crowned AAW Tag Team Champions The Lucha Brothers make their return for their first title defense, and they face two teams that offer some stiff competition. Fenix had a scare following their title win last month, but luckily it proved to not be as serious as first thought and the Mexican superstar is back with his brother Pentagon Jr. to defend their new gold. On one side, they face the former tag team champions they defeated last month, in FireFox. The former AAW tag champs are two incredible athletic specimens and will be hungry to reclaim their belts. On the other side, they face another tag team looking for revenge in former IMPACT Tag Team Champions LAX, who the Lucha Brothers defeated for the IMPACT titles (in a match that aired the same night they won the AAW tag team titles). It all comes full circle, as Lucha Brothers look to prove their dominance one month ago wasn’t a fluke.
