Preview: Alpha-1 Super Slam Sunday (2/3/19)

Hamilton, Ontario, Canada’s Alpha-1 (A1) has become one of Canada’s top indie promotions, combining national (and international) stars with homegrown Canadian talent to produce top-notch shows. Founded by IMPACT Wrestling‘s “All Ego” Ethan Page in 2010, it’s now become a Canadian destination for many top-flight indie stars working in the Great White North. This Sunday they return for their second show of 2019 with Super Slam Sunday, which boasts multiple title matches, including one for the IMPACT World Heavyweight Championship.

Alessandro Del Bruno (w/ Mark Wheeler) Open Challenge

Alessandro Del Bruno is a 13-year veteran of the Canadian indies and a staple of A1 since they debuted in 2010. A former A1 Alpha Male Champion and 2x A1 Zero Gravity Champion, he’s being accompanied by one of Canada’s top emerging stars in Mark Wheeler, whose debuted with Glory Pro and Freelance Wrestling in the US recently. Del Bruno is issuing an open challenge so it will be interesting to see who takes on this crafty veteran.

The Sad Buds (Rickey Shane Page & BMD) vs. Savage Society (Holden Albright & Terrell Kenneth)

The Sad Buds are making their tag team debut on Sunday night, but the two members are hardly strangers to an A1 ring. Former Combat Zone Wrestling (CZW) World Heavyweight Champion Rickey Shane Page has been a regular with A1 since 2014, where he’s a former A1 Alpha Male Champion and one of the toughest men in wrestling today. He’s taking on a partner in hometown hero BMD, who, despite only wrestling since 2017, is already breaking into the US, teaming with Lucas Calhoun and Jeremy Leary in CHIKARA last season. They face a tough obstacle in their debut match together though, in the rough and ready tandem of Savage Society. Holden Albright has emerged as a rising star with hardcore viciousness and his partner, Terrell Kenneth, is equally as tough. This one won’t be pretty, as both teams look to make a statement in the A1 tag division.

EZE & Western Med Connection (Dr. Daniel C. Rockingham & Jim Nye) vs. Swoggle, Gregory Iron & Allie Kat

“EZE” Eric Cairnie is another Hamilton native and Canadian indie veteran, who has been a longtime regular with Pure Wrestling Association (PWA) out of Kitchener, Ontario. He recently defeated Eddie Kingston, so he’s got the chops to go toe-to-toe with anyone. He’s teaming up with former 2x A1 Tag Team Champions Western Med Connection, featuring Ohio’s Dr. Daniel C. Rockingham (who also competes for Absolute Intense Wrestling) and Hamilton’s Jim Nye. Their opponents are a bizarre trio, lead by former WWE Superstar Swoggle, hot off his appearance at last Sunday’s WWE Royal Rumble. Cleveland’s Gregory Iron now calls A1 home, and the former A1 Zero Gravity Champion and AIW Intense Champion joins Swoggle in this match, as well as rising women’s star Allie Kat, who is breaking out of the Texas indies with appearances for IWA Mid South, NOVA Pro, Black Label Pro, AIW and All American Wrestling (AAW) to name a few.

Trey Miguel vs. Zachary Wentz vs. Kody Lane

The Rascalz implode – well, not really – but face off in this triple threat, that sees IMPACT Wrestling’s Trey Miguel and Zachary Wentz compete in a friendly triple threat. It may not be so friendly for the third competitor, rising Texas indie star Kody Lane from Anarchy Championship Wrestling (ACW) and Inspire Pro Wrestling, who returns after making his A1 debut last year.

A1 Zero Gravity Championship: Cheech (c) vs. Shane Sabre

Photo: Alpha-1

The first title match of the night sees current reigning A1 Zero Gravity Champion and Midwest veteran Cheech defend his title. The reigning and 4x AIW Tag Team Champion, with former WWE Superstar Colin Delaney in To Infinity And Beyond, is two months into his Zero Gravity reign, but he’s facing one of A1’s biggest young stars in Shane Sabre. Sabre is one half of the A1 Tag Team Champions The Space Pirates with another hot Canadian indie star, Space Monkey, but on Sunday, Sabre will be looking to add another belt around his waist.

A1 Alpha Male & A1 Outer Limits Championship: Kobe Durst (Alpha Male Champion) vs. Sami Callihan (Outer Limits Champion) vs. Josh Alexander vs. Justin Sane

Photo: Alpha-1

A1’s top two singles titles are on the line in this special four-way encounter, that will see the first fall win the A1 Outer Limits Championship and the second win the A1 Alpha Male title. Alpha Male Champion Kobe Durst has emerged as one of Canada’s best-kept secrets the past year, working for Glory Pro, Freelance Wrestling, Beyond Wrestling, and Black Label Pro, where he’s the reigning BLP Indiana State Champion. A1 Outer Limits Champion and IMPACT Wrestling Wrestler of the Year Sami Callihan needs no introduction, but he has a strong chance of walking out as a double champion should his violence come out in his favor. The other two challengers will offer plenty of opposition and threat to titles loss. “The Walking Weapon” Josh Alexander is no stranger to the US indies. The Canadian star is a regular tag team partner of Ethan Page in Monster Mafia, who competed in Ring of Honor, AAW and won the tag team titles in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG). The former 4x A1 Alpha Male Champion is also the newly crowned Destiny Champion. “The Modern Warrior” Justin Sane, from nearby Burlington, Ontario, has also been a staple with A1 since day one, and was the first ever A1 Alpha Male Champion, holding it for 231 days.

IMPACT World Heavyweight Championship: Johnny Alpha (c) vs. MJF vs. Ethan Page

Photo: Alpha-1

In the main event triple threat match, Johnny Impact – who for one night will assume the moniker of Johnny Alpha – will defend his IMPACT World Heavyweight Championship against two tough competitors. The first is A1’s founder and fellow IMPACT star Ethan Page, who is also the reigning BLP Heavyweight Champion. The third competitor just found some legal loopholes to enter this matchup, which will see All Elite Wrestling signee MJF try and procure the IMPACT title before heading back to his new mentor Cody Rhodes.
