#AndNEW: Caristico Wins NWA World Historic Middleweight Championship

El Enmascarado de Plata, Caristico defeated Mexican legend Ultimo Guerrero this week for the NWA World Historic Middleweight Championship. Caristico, who is also known as the original Mistico, surprised everybody in Arena Coliseo Guadalajara when he ended Ultimo Guerrero’s 1,087 day-reign.

The wins brings a lot of ramifications for Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL). For starters, as the lucha libre page Lucha Blog points out, with Caristico’s win, he enters this year’s CMLL Campeonato Universal tournament. You need to be a champion in CMLL to be able to participate in the historic tournament.  The situation resulted in a Win/Win for CMLL, since Ultimo Guerrero holds the CMLL World Trios Championship with Gran Guerrero & Euforia.

The NWA World Historic Middleweight Championship is one of CMLL’s most prestigious prizes. Wrestlers like Andrade “Cien” Almas, Finn Balor, Volador Jr. and the former champion, Ultimo Guerrero, have won the championship in CMLL. Guerrero had the longest reign of them all. This is Caristico’s first reign as NWA World Historic Middleweight Championship and third if you count the original, National Wrestling Alliance sanction championship, that dates back to 1949.

Since returning in CMLL, this is Caristico’s first championship win. He previously had challenge Mephisto, Volador Jr. and even Ultimo Guerrero for their respective championships.

Caristico is still a top draw in Mexico. He was bigger before going to WWE in 2011 (where he became the original Sin Cara), but still, in CMLL, he wrestles regularly in the main event or semi. Caristico’s drawing power was shown when, in a brief interaction with debuting Pentagon Jr., the crowd exploded for both gladiators battling in the square circle. Fans tend to confuse Caristico and the new Mistico – Misticio II – since both wrestlers tag regularly and wrestle some times against each other. With a championship win, Caristico could have a good position in the card ensured. Although rivalries against Mistico, Volador Jr. and Pentagon are evident, there’s still no sign of a Aniversario lucha de apuestas match.
