Match Point: PCO vs. LA Park (10/4/18)

Match Point is an on-going series at Last Word on Pro Wrestling, where we look at intriguing matchups in indie wrestling and beyond. They may be dream matches, first-time matchups, or hotly anticipated rematches. Today’s edition focuses on a just announced match for Major League Wrestling’s upcoming FURY ROAD tapings in New York City on October 4, 2018, featuring two physical legends in PCO and LA Park.

Two decades ago, if you were watching WWF and WCW just prior to the start of the Attitude Era, the idea of Quebecer Pierre fighting “The Chairman” La Parka being a dream match may have seemed a tad laughable. The Quebecers, although 3x WWF World Tag Team Champions, were hardly a vision of grace or seriousness. And while La Parka was indeed a lucha legend in Mexico, he was more used in a comedic role in WCW, air guitaring on a folding chair and used more as a foil than a danger. But fast forward to the year 2018, and you have both men on a career resurgence that is making them more popular than ever in their combined 102 years on this dust ball planet called Earth. But on October 4, 2018, at Major League Wrestling (MLW)‘s tapings at the Melrose Ballroom in New York City, we will see just that. Two men who have defied questionable gimmicks to emerge hotter as 50 year olds and become must see indie attractions based on simply being themselves – Quebecer Pierre Carl Ouellette has been transformed into the Franksteinesque “Not Human” PCO and La Parka is competing as LA Park, setting huge attendance numbers in Mexico helping out both AAA and CMLL. “This match replaces the originally scheduled Pentagon Jr. & Rey Fenix vs. LA Park & El Hijo de LA Park bout,” MLW stated in their press release today. “Due to circumstances beyond our control, Pentagon Jr. & Rey Fenix will not be able to attend the October 4 show. With fans demanding an LA Park vs. PCO encounter, matchmakers quickly moved to sign the new match.”

PCO has become an absolute force on the indie scene, a hulking juggernaut seemingly oblivious to pain, uninterested in adding wins or losses to his resume, but instead causing as much damage as possible to his opponents. Even in his losses, his opponents have looked more the spoiled victor than the victor with the spoils. He’s had a war with WALTER that has spanned multiple countries, facing the likes of Nick Gage, Sabu, Matt Riddle, Chris Dickinson, Brian Cage, Homicide and Dan Maff, and continues to release some of the most frightening “training videos” featuring his trainer/handler Destro torturing PCO while he works out.

LA Park has worked primarily in Mexico since his last match with WCW in 2000, flipping between AAA and CMLL every few years. He became a free agent this year and now travels between multiple major promotions, including hot rivals AAA, CMLL and The Crash Lucha Libre. CMLL saw huge increases for their Arena Mexico cards with LA Park on them and his anticipated hair vs mask match against Los Ingobernables co-founder Rush is one of the hottest storylines in lucha. With AAA, he’s set to appear at this year’s TripleMania in a massive fatal four way with Pentagon Jr., Psycho Clown and El Hijo del Fantasma (aka King Cuerno in Lucha Underground) that is also one of Mexico’s most anticipated matches. In Mexico, the brutality of the original La Parka is a thing of legend. And on October 4, two of wrestling’s most sought after indie free agents – aged 50 (PCO) and 52 (LA Park) – are going to finally collide in an MLW ring.
