Marty Scurll Is New IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion

Sunday was a big day for pro wrestling, with the news of Chris Jericho facing Kenny Omega at Wrestle Kingdom 12 this January, Triple H appearing at an ICW event in the UK, and Impact Wrestling returning to the PPV scene with Bound For Glory. But in all that news, there was a huge title change at NJPW Power Struggle, when Bullet Club‘s resident “Villain”, Marty Scurll, defeated his fellow countryman Will Ospreay to become the new IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion.

Scurll has had an amazing calendar year since last fall’s debut with Ring of Honor, where he ended Will Ospreay’s two day reign as ROH Television Champion and held it for 175 days. Last month he defeated Joe Hendry to win the WCPW World Heavyweight title, and now he’s rained on the parade of Ospreay once again, cutting Ospreay’s IWGP Junior Heavyweight title run short again at only 27 days. During that time he joined Bullet Club, helping oust Adam Cole, and becoming one of the faction’s most popular members, joining the cast of Being The Elite in the process.

With his win, Scurll becomes just the 11th gaijin to win the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship since the belt’s introduction in 1986 and the second Englishman – Ospreay was the first England-born champion, accomplishing the feat last month. It was also announced that Scurll will defend his new title at Wrestle Kingdom 12 in a 4-way match against the past three men to hold the belt – Will Ospreay, KUSHIDA and Hiromu Takahashi. With the victory, it gives Bullet Club their first IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion since Kenny Omega held the belt in 2015, adding to their current round of championships that features the ROH World Championship (Cody Rhodes), IWGP US Champion (Kenny Omega), WCPW World Championship (Scurll), and ROH 6-Man Tag Team Championship (The Young Bucks & “Hangman” Adam Page).
