Indianapolis Colts Sign Anthony Castonzo
It is rare to find a consistent offensive tackle who can play at a high level who rarely gets hurt. Yet the Indianapolis Colts managed to do so. Left tackle Anthony Castonzo is coming off another great – but not too great – season, his ninth straight. Starting all 16 games, Castonzo only had two penalties and gave up three sacks. He finished the season with an 81.3 overall grade from Pro Football Focus. Once again, he finished the season as one of the top 10 left tackles in the league at seventh out of 87. This is not the first time Castonzo has been snubbed for any sort of recognition for his great play. He has graded between 76.9-84.2 every season except his rookie year, remaining remarkably consistent.
The 22nd overall pick in the 2011 draft, Castonzo was a coveted prospect out of Boston College. At 6’7” and 307lbs, there was never a question as to if he would play tackle in the pros. Just a matter of if he can match up well against stronger, more powerful edge rushers given his lankier frame. Castonzo has had his fair share of struggles, but the positives have outweighed the negatives.
Castonzo has played a vital role, easily being one of the top Colts over the past decade. He has missed only 12 games in nine seasons, playing all 16 games in six of them. He lasted the entire Andrew Luck era, being the rock of the offensive line during a time where it was one of the worst in the league. For Castonzo to not have a single pro bowl appearance is a testament to the talent in the AFC. Who knows how much longer Castonzo will play, after retirement talk emerged following the 2019 season. One thing for sure is that he brings a consistent, high-caliber player to any offensive line.
