Corey Liuget

Corey Liuget Signs With Oakland Raiders

Eight-year NFL veteran defensive tackle Corey Liuget is expected to join the Oakland Raiders for the 2019 season. Liuget, an Illinois alumnus, has spent the entirety of his NFL career with the Chargers organization, both in San Diego and Los Angeles. The Raiders placed Doug Martin on the injured reserve list in a corresponding move.

Corey Liuget Signs With Raiders

Corey Liuget entered free agency on the heels of a rough 2018. His season got off to a bad start when the NFL handed him a four-game suspension for a PED violation. The defensive tackle made his way back to the field in Week Five, but he didn’t stay there very long. After six games, the 28-year old tore his quad against the Denver Broncos. This injury cost Liuget the remainder of his season, and the defensive tackle finished 2018 with 1.5 sacks, 14 tackles, and five quarterback hits. Los Angeles had a team option for 2019 but opted not to pick it up.

Corey Liuget initially entered the NFL as the San Diego Chargers’ first-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. Despite having essentially no off-season thanks to the NFL lockout, Liuget still managed to play in 15 games as a rookie, starting 13. During that sample, Liuget recorded one sack, 19 tackles, and three tackles-for-loss. Liuget built on his promising rookie season to establish himself as one of the better players on the Chargers’ defense. In 2012, the second-year defensive lineman recorded seven sacks, 51 tackles, 11 tackles-for-loss, and 10 quarterback hits. Additionally, Liuget managed to deflect an impressive nine passes at the line of scrimmage.

2012 was probably his best season, but Liuget has been a consistent player throughout the grand majority of his professional career. Through eight seasons, Liuget has accumulated 24 sacks, 275 tackles, 59 tackles-for-loss, and 53 quarterback hits. Despite his overall production, the defensive lineman has never made it to a Pro Bowl or All-Pro team.
