Shaq Barrett Signs With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Barrett played 13 games for the Denver Broncos in 2018 without making a start. Playing situationally, Barrett finished his season with three sacks, 28 tackles, seven quarterback hits, and one defended pass. The sack total was his lowest since 2016 while the tackle total was the lowest of his career. While his overall numbers were down, the advanced analytics website Pro Football Focus felt Barrett played adequately in 2018. He didn’t play enough snaps to qualify for a league-wide ranking, but Pro Football Focus gave Barrett an above-average 75.9 grade for his 2018 efforts.

Barrett played college at Nebraska-Omaha and Colorado State. He initially entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent back in the 2014 season. Playing in all four preseason games, the then-rookie earned a season-long role on the practice squad after recording six tackles and two sacks in the preseason.

The former undrafted free agent made his NFL debut in Week One of the 2015 season. Playing in all 16 games, Barrett recorded 5.5 sacks, 42 tackles, and 12 quarterback hits for the eventual Super Bowl champions. Barrett’s best game of the 2015 season came in Week Six against the Cleveland Browns. Filling in for an injured DeMarcus Ware, Barrett recorded 1.5 sacks, nine tackles, three tackles-for-loss, and two quarterback hits. He also forced and recovered a fumble in Denver’s 26-23 victory.

Barrett spent the next three seasons on the Broncos active roster, serving as a rotational role player. Throughout his career, the five-year NFL veteran has accumulated 14 sacks, 137 tackles, 35 quarterback hits, and seven forced fumbles.
