New York Jets, Quincy Enunwa Agree to Contract Extension

The New York Jets officially crossed a key item off their free agency to-do list. According to Eric Edholm of Pro Football Weekly, the Jets re-signed wide receiver Quincy Enunwa to a four-year, $36 million extension prior to Week 17’s action. Enunwa was scheduled to hit free agency at the start of the 2019 league year.

After missing the entirety of the 2017 season due to injury, Enunwa bounced back in a big way throughout 2018. Playing in 11 games, Enunwa recorded 38 receptions for 449 yards and a touchdown. Enunwa started the season off hot, recording 21 receptions for 278 yards and a touchdown in the first four weeks of the season. However, the young wideout battled injuries throughout the 2018 campaign. Most recently, Enunwa suffered an ankle injury, ending his season prematurely. Still, Enunwa showed a natural connection with rookie quarterback Sam Darnold which should blossom over the next few seasons.

Enunwa originally arrived in the league as a sixth-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. After recording just 22 receptions for 315 yards through his first two years in the league, Enunwa exploded in 2016. With Eric Decker sidelined for the majority of the year, Enunwa finished the season with 58 receptions for 857 yards and four touchdowns while appearing in all 16 games. His best game of 2016 came in Week 12 when he recorded five receptions for 109 yards and a touchdown against the New England Patriots.

Prior to this deal, the Jets were expected to have roughly $106 million dollars in cap space, per Over The Cap. Enunwa’s deal will eat into some of that space, but the Jets should remain one of the bigger players in 2019’s free agency period. New York also has Jermaine Kearse and Morris Claiborne scheduled to hit free agency at the end of the league year.
