The New England Patriots already thin wide receiver depth chart just got a little bit thinner. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Patriots have elected to part ways with wide receiver Kenny Britt. Britt had been dealing with a hamstring injury throughout camp and had not appeared in a preseason game.

Kenny Britt Released By New England Patriots
Britt’s release was likely caused by his lingering hamstring injury. After standing out early in minicamp, Britt suffered a hamstring injury which limited his practice time. The injury lingered, forcing Britt to start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list. While he was activated and practice eligible, Britt was still limited throughout the practice sessions open to the media. Additionally, there were some reports that Britt struggled to understand the Patriots complex playbook.
Britt initially joined the Patriots late in the 2017 season. After being released by the Cleveland Browns, Britt latched on with the New England Patriots, joining the club prior to the Week 15 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers. During his abbreviated tenure with New England, Britt hauled in two passes for 23 yards.
Britt initially entered the league as a first-round draft pick by the Tennessee Titans. Britt’s best season with the Titans came in 2010 when the second-year receiver hauled in 42 receptions for 775 yards and nine touchdowns. In all, Britt spent five years in Tennessee, recording 157 catches for 2,450 yards and 19 touchdowns.
Following the 2013 season, Britt left Tennessee to join his old head coach, Jeff Fischer, and the Saint Louis Rams. Britt missed just one game during his three seasons with the Rams, hauling in 152 receptions for 2,431 yards and 11 touchdowns. His best season came in 2016 when he finished his season with 68 receptions for 1,002 yards and five touchdowns.
Following his success with the Rams, Britt signed a four-year, $32.5 million deal with the Cleveland Browns. Unfortunately for Britt, he couldn’t even complete his first year under that deal. Starting in four games while appearing in five others, Britt recorded just 18 receptions for 233 yards and two touchdowns.
